darkfighterg6g Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 ok so i want to learn kung fu, wing chun, or tai chi[sorry if spelt wrong]. the main problem there are no chinese martial arts school/dojos. the only thing i could find was mcdojos. so i would like to know if i could learn one of them by myself. i know i need to go to a dojo to get realy good but quite frankly that just isnt an option and i just dont see it happening any time soon what so ever. there arent any other martial arts i would want to learn. so 1. can i learn it from computer,books,etc.2.what are some websites you would suggests.3.which style do you think is good. also remember a dojo/gym is out of option there arent any near me and i dont see it happening any time soon. i also dont have the money as well. its not like i could give something else up for it i rarely get anything. i know this path will take longer but im willing to take it.thanks in advanced
MasterPain Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 If you want to learn a real martial art, you'd be better off joining a backyard wrestling group than trying to learn kung fu solo. My fists bleed death. -Akuma

datguy Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 You cannot learn a martial art and become effective all by yourself. Who's going to correct your mistakes? Plus if you pick up any nasty habits they're hard to break. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from and how far are you willing to travel? Maybe I could search some places online and have you check them out because in all honesty you should really train with a real instructor. Oh, before I forget, keep your mind open...wing chun may sound good but you may change your mind and figure out you like another martial art..perhaps a non Chinese art. “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
darkfighterg6g Posted June 17, 2012 Author Posted June 17, 2012 i completly understnd what your saying but i dont have the money and there is only one or two legit gyms near me[found out if they were legit on differnt fourms] and also alot of gyms are in one the most dangerous city in the united states[ i think my uncle said top 20 or so] so my option is self training[i know not the best idea better than nothing i was thinking] plus i could ocasionly spar with my brother or my cousin sometimes. i willnt have money for anything anytime soon and a job is out option. so self training, i know bad habbits, no one to critiqe me, but what if i was to be a nut about technique. and arent thete storys of okinawin[sorry if spelt wrong] karate masters being self taught. also ive read mma, boxers, etc fighters to be self taught. im not trying to be a master just basics for school fights if they ever come my way.also i read a story somewhere where a man beat like 6 guys in a fight and a kid saw him and asked him to teach him he said no so the kid secretly watched and learned the art by practicing it by himself. edit: if u could tell me a martial art for defnse in school fights that be nice, but as of now im kinda leaning toward wing chun or muay thia
datguy Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 The best defense for a school fight is to stay out of any drama and to always be respectful..cliche, I know but it's all true. If you want my opinion, I would start lifting at the school, join the wrestling team, and if you insist on teaching yourself focus on boxing punches but keep everything simple. That way if or when you can get a teacher you will know some ground fighting and the simplicity of a boxer's punch is much more easy to learn on your own than wing chins chain punching is to learn on your own. “Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. JusticeZero Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Right, I have to agree here that if you don't have a background, self-training is hardly recognizably better than not training at all. I've tried self-training before, because I was trying to track down a teacher. I learned more in one hour with a student of the art than I did in six months of working by myself.Join the wrestling team, which is a martial art that will give you a solid and important foundation for anything else you might train.1: No2: See above3: The one that you can find a good teacher for "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia
JusticeZero Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 also alot of gyms are in one the most dangerous city in the united states[ i think my uncle said top 20 or so]As a scientist who actually studies this, among related topics, I have to note this: If you drive or are driven past a school in your own town, you have already exposed yourself to enough risk of crippling injury and death that visiting the "20 most dangerous cities in the country", all of which are far safer than most anywhere else on the planet, is not going to move the needle, safetywise. Especially if you are just stopping in to go to a class, which means that you aren't doing the high risk activities that expose you to danger like buying/selling drugs or wandering around visibly intoxicated.im not trying to be a master just basics for school fights if they ever come my way.A wrestling background or a bit of boxing like you can find in all kinds of low cost gyms is far more than enough to deal with any of those situations. Mostly because you won't look like the sort of person who is an easy fight. "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia
JusticeZero Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Saying what answer you want to hear does not make that answer more correct. The best thing to train "on your own" is the art that you can get someone to work with you regularly on. If you have no instruction then you need to find someone to teach you.
