shadowspawn Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Interestingly enough, I've actually had this happen to me once in the past. What had happened is that my original instructor had to abandon the dojo for a while for IRL things that I won't get into and one of his students took over the class. Honestly, I believe there were others who could have done a better job in the dojo than he did, but I guess it was better than nothing. Anyway a few months later, he was caught buying alcohol for minors and was basically banned from the place that used to host the dojo. After a few years, the original instructor returned, but by then I had already been an active member of my current dojo and so I just stuck with that.As per the questions:1. Not necessarily. I'll quit if what they're teaching isn't very effective in any real way, shape, or form.2. Rank/title means little to nothing to me. If I have to get rid of it, it's no big deal.3. See above.4. Not at all. Maybe if I were practicing some form of Kung Fu or other deeply religious-tied martial art I would, but I don't see how your instructor being a "bad guy" should lose you respect among other practitioners.5. Why would anyone do that? Unless of course their lineage isn't based on who they trained under so much as it is who they want to have trained under. In that case, I'd consider it somewhat deceitful personally, but that's just me.
evergrey Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 I think it would depend in part on whether or not I agreed that the crime in question really WAS a Horrible Nasty Evil Bad Thing.Like prostitution? Nah, I don't really actually object to that, so long as everyone is a consenting adult and not being forced into it.My very visual imagination is trying to force my instructors into miniskirts with fishnets now, and I am filled with horror at the thought of it. Groinstrike Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Some good posts from Evil Dave re: the particulars, and Justice Zero re: the issue of unequal justice in the court system. As I recall from a time I Googled "moral turpitude" a while back (since I was curious as to the exact meaning), the term was coined quite a while ago. Of course, what is acceptable in society changes, and what is acceptable in one society is not acceptable in another. While I would want and expect my sensei to be of high ethical standards, I also realize that he is human. In terms of the actual offenses that could be considered "moral turpitude", I think there are gray areas. In my profession I work with many low income people, and I can't tell you how many have been convicted of assault based on being a bit inebriated and in a scuffle where it was not really clear what happened, so both people were charged with assault. Adultery? I'm pretty sure there are a few high ranking senseis who are guilty of that offense, which in my view is between that person and his or her partner. Not all that admirable, maybe, but perhaps forgiveable. All I am saying is, I think there are gray areas, and I would need more information before making my decision! My thoughts exactly.!!
bushido_man96 Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Hypothetical question(s)...Your instructor has just been convicted in a court of law for committing crimes involving moral turpitude...What do you do?Wow, that would be quite the ordeal. Here goes...Do you quit his/her school?Depends. If he is gone to jail, and if the style has ousted him, then I would consider staying, if the replacement can be trusted as being a better person. But, assuming we didn't see this coming the first time around, it shows how much we really think we know someone. If there is no replacement, then I guess it would shut down anyway.Do you keep your rank/title?Yes. Those are mine. Would you get rid of a car you bought if you found out the salesman did the same things?Do you want to keep your rank/title?See above answer. They are mine.Do you throw any and all of your rank/title certificates into the trash? No. See salesman reference above.Do you lose face in the MA world by association sakes alone? You might. People are going to think what they want to, regardless of how much or how little they actually know about a situation. Let them think. I think as long as I keep walking my path, I should be fine.Do you erase your instructors name from your lineage?I don't think it would be necessary. If someone says, "Hey, didn't you train with that slimeball that got thrown in jail?", then I'd just answer yes. Some peole will never forget, some may never know. In reference to the above answer, I can't really "unwalk" the path I've walked to this point. So it is what it is.Nice Q&A here, Bob. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

They worked us so hard I almost passed out, and I did get a small asthma attack, and a lot of pretty solid beatings from blackbelts, LOL!It was just what I needed though, with everything going on in my life. But hey, today I found out that I don't have cancer. evergrey Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 OSU! I'm pretty happy about it myself.Still hasn't really sunk in. I mean, that axe has been hanging over my head for a long time now... I haven't REALLY noticed yet that it's gone. Also got a new housemate, woohoo!I don't trust the "justice" system, as it stands. If my instructor got thrown in jail, I'd investigate myself. http://kyokushinchick.blogspot.com/"If you can fatally judo-chop a bull, you can sit however you want." -MasterPain, on why Mas Oyama had Kyokushin karateka sit in seiza with their clenched fists on their thighs.

evergrey Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Such a relief. Also the doctor believes that way back 6 years ago, I was misdiagnosed with a serious deadly kind of cancer, that has been scaring the pants off me since then. He says he doesn't think I can have it, and sees no sign of it, so yay! Breathing, bit by bit, over here.
