NOTE: This post was originally a video of something from my school. After talking with my instructor, he preferred I not link directly to it. I chose to start a new topic, considering I cannot just delete this one. Can a moderator please move this to the equipment section? :D

I was wondering what others do about drying their gi. I normally line dry them, but I have heard of others that Machine dry them. Have you noticed any problems with machine drying?

Drying a gi in a machine dryer will shrink it, and can cause a little extra wear just by virtue of it rolling around in a hot metal box. I am built a bit strangely, though, so I always have to buy a gi that is too large, which means that the shrinking that occurs in the dryer is perfectly fine by me.

I've always machine dried my gi for as long as I can remember, but what do I know. My wife has forbid me from the washer/dryer...I mean, I don't sort because it's way too consuming, imho.

I would do that for any Kata competition; appearance is part of the scoring. Other than that, yeah, that's dedication.

Is it really that weird? :-? We'd get our butts kicked if we turned up to class with a creased dobok!

These days, I'll only iron my gis for our annual testing cycle. Other than that, I'll wear my gis right out of the dryer. Did I say iron, I mean dry clean, I don't have the patience anymore to iron.

I would prefer to hang dry my gi but if I do use the clothes dryer I set it on the lowest heat, shortest time cycle. I procrastinate on washing my gi and thats the only reason mine ends up in the dryer. Never had any problems using the dryer under the mentioned settings.

In my school, I have refused students to wear the black belt if the Go/Dobok is un-ironed also 100 press-ups for Kyu Grades OR Dan grad

To me it shows pride, I'm ex forces so we love everything ironed. I have this warning that if anyone turns up to a Dan grading with an un-ironed Gi, I will fail them on the spot, I've not have to fail anyone yet.
