SKK28770
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light here. I realize Shudokan is not a widely known style (not in the big picture of things at least) but I was curious of the Kyoku kata series. In researching, the only video (or much info at all besides just the names) I've found is via YouTube of a school(s) in Mexico and/or S. America which appears to have some connection to the lineage. In these or other videos from the same account or associated accounts, I believe I've seen referrence to to SK and/or Toyama. Most of it is in Spanish so it's difficult for me to say with certainty. Anyhow... it appears to show videos for Kyoku Shodan - Godan. I showed them to a friend of mine who said that the first two are basically how he's seen them performed but as the series advances, he said the differences become more. He didn't really elaborate but it would seem the differences weren't drastic enough to call it a different form but certainly noticeablly different. So my question... if anyone is informed and/or inclined, what say you? Do these series of Kyoku kata appear legit/credible/acceptable/whatever you want to call it? I've included the YouTube links below. Also, I've heard the series of Kyoku is of I-V and of I-VII. I believe my friend is only aware of up to Godan. Any insight there? Any/all feedback is much appreciated. Thanks. Trevelyan
Kanken Toyama developed seven Kyoku katas for his style called Shudokan. This series progresses from very basic to very complex. The first few kata are taught only when a karateka has reached the brown belt level, the remainder are taught as the karateka advances through the dan ranks. These kata show Toyama's amalgamation of the Japanese, Okinawan, and Chinese styles he had learned in his time. The first two videos seem passable, however as they progress I am seeing movements being abridged, substituted, or omitted. These forms contain the fighting techniques of Toyama's style which include stances and strikes not in other styles of Karate. One would not be able to learn these katas properly without an instructor in the style. Dobbersky
OSU I would love to see the official bunkai to these kata before I can make a formal decision on the kata. If they can't produce one to me it undermines what I cam see as excellent kata, OSU "Challenge is a Dragon with a Gift in its mouth....Tame the Dragon and the Gift is Yours....."
