moobrack Posted August 27, 2002 Posted August 27, 2002 Hi all, The subject of this topic is about mind being over matter. Do you believe in the saying Personally i do. being able to visualise your tactics before you apply them is a skill in itself. Being able to see what to do and how you are going to do it. But this is not approachable or useable in all situations. This is why martial arts is used and practised to build up a higher mental knowledge and a better range of plans for the martial arts student. Put it this way The more the student knows, the better he can think about applying the technique and transforming it for different situations. I would like to hear your views on 'Mind over Matter' in martial arts. BlackI Posted August 27, 2002 Posted August 27, 2002 For me Mind Elevation is the biggest reason I am even into MA. It is about the body, but more so about the mind. Plus, understanding the limitations that you have for yourself are many times not your real limitations, that is when Mind over Matter takes over. Making me push that much more!!!! moobrack Posted August 27, 2002 Author Posted August 27, 2002 very inspirational post I agree with you though, martial arts is for me a subject in life which is able to broaden your horizons and make you more aware of your physical and also mental limitations. martial arts does not only train the mind, but also the body - but ask yourself this - can your body work without the mind? G95champ Posted August 28, 2002 Posted August 28, 2002 I agree the mind is more powerful. Now there is just some things the body can not do based on one's ht, wt, age, health etc. however I am a fim believer that pain and stuff can be controled to a certin extent by your mind. Out of sight out of mind. When I was young and got cut I put dirt on it. LOL. I did not see the blood it did not hurt as bad. If I don't mind it don't matter right? (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
moobrack Posted August 28, 2002 Author Posted August 28, 2002 I agree Pain in some respects can be psychoschemtaical (brought on by your sight and the mind) If you believe you are not in pain - eventually the pain will go. This is how you are able to train your mind for readiness and for optimum use and ability in combat. Also if you can use your mind to such an extent - your skills and stamina in competition and/or in the streets is increased. BlackI Posted August 28, 2002 Posted August 28, 2002 I don't know G95( I agree and also disagree) about the restriction with age, weight and height. I know this can be a problem, but look at how many Grandmasters there are that are old as dirt(no disrepect) and these guys can beat alot of the top guys. I know that training early played a part in it. Now, if a person can acheive such a high level. IS it possible to train to train your mind to get to that level even when you have reached that elderly level. Or look at some of the shorter NBA players that can slam dunk the ball. I don't know sometimes I think anything is possible as long as you believe and your mind is discipline enough. In search of the Temple of Light
moobrack Posted August 28, 2002 Author Posted August 28, 2002 I believe that only when your mind is disciplined then you are able to train and execute techniques to the best of your ability. Although i have just contradicted myself, you can never perform your best - you can for the moment - but you cannot thereafter. There is always room for improvement, this stems from the mental side of martial arts - if you believe and think things through - then you can execute moves with accuracy and power. Bratt Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 I believe in Mind over Matter without a doubt. The only way I can conquer my fear or do something which makes me so nervous my knees knock together, I usually think of something else, or nothing at all. Mind over Matter is very helpful in Martial Arts. If someone were to give you a good shot in the gut, most people would panic (I don't blame them either) but we should quickly regain ourselves and continue. Just like if someone were to punch you in the nose, your eyes water, your nose is probably bleeding and terribly sore, you just think of something else to regain control of the situation and yourself (of the pain also) and continue. There is also an emotional Mind over Matter such as if a family member were to pass away, you would of course grieve, but sooner or later time must keep on and so should you. Think of the good times, and not the bad. Everyone leaves us sooner or later, but it's not whats important. Whats important is that were all here tigether NOW, think of the present not the futur and do not stick to the past. I hpope my lil 5 cents made sense to anyone I know what Im saying makes alot of it to me. CTpizzaboy Posted October 30, 2002 Posted October 30, 2002 You must train your mind first, before you can ever train your body. In other words, you must comprehend what you're about to do before you can do it effectively. And in the martial arts, effectiveness is everything. ---You chose who you are. Canh T.I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversations.
