Montana Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Define LARP please. If you don't want to stand behind our troops, please..feel free to stand in front of them.Student since January 1975---4th Dan, retired due to non-martial arts related injuries.
JusticeZero Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Familiar with the concept but there are a few variants and so it's difficult to operationalize. I'm going to guess - based on thread location - that the reference is to some variant of people in costume running around a battle scenario tagging people out with weaponized pool noodles made to look like melee weapons.I don't, i've tried it but it was severely unrealistic. The SCA stuff with rattan bludgeoning weapons looked to be a bit better (though still very style-specific) until people apparently started ignoring hits and making the style have to focus on causing injuries through armor. Liver Punch Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 We often work on something half-way between weapon sparring and LARPing. One such recent example would be where we had 4 guys; one was armed with two training knives, one was armed with a training knife and training eskrima stick, one guy with two training eskrima sticks, and one guy with a training spear. We're all stuck in a room and practice murdering each other. While these sorts of things may not be the best specific skill builders, they're great for timing, speed, agility, endurance, mental toughness, and a general practice of being a "back-stabbing dirty old man"We've also done similar things on a hillside at dusk. It's beyond insanity. "A gun is a tool. Like a butcher knife or a harpoon, or uhh... an alligator."― Homer, The Simpsons

tallgeese Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 The knives and sticks are staples of the art's weapon side. I can't speak for the rest of the craziness or combinations http://alphajiujitsu.com/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJhRVuwbm__LwXPvFMReMww
Liver Punch Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I own a spear, and am somewhat familiar with its various functions. If it came down to needing to use it in self defense, I gladly would. "A gun is a tool. Like a butcher knife or a harpoon, or uhh... an alligator."― Homer, The Simpsons
