evergrey
OSU,So I've been waiting for the majority of a year to test for my new rank. If I hadn't snapped my ACL, I probably would have tested for it last June. They decided to have me go up for rank tonight!Unfortunately, I cannot go.Why?Because last week a kid's grandfather insisted that even though he was still sick, he went to school so he should go to karate class. Schools and children are walking petri dishes in the winter, as any parent or teacher knows. Some people will do anything to get a night off from babysitting. This applies to adults too though!Coming to class sick doesn't prove how tough and dedicated you are! It doesn't build character! IT GETS YOUR CLASSMATES SICK! It can get everyone who shows up at the dojo sick! What if it gets someone who is older? Swine flu at age 22 is awful... try it at age 60. What if there is someone there who has a weak immune system?Me, I don't get sick nearly as often as I used to. Before I started working out so much, and eating what is right for ME to eat, I would be sick for months at at time. Scary sick. It's better now, but still, when something does get through, it's easy for me to end up so sick I have to go to the hospital. Now, instead of testing for rank, I'm thinking about whether or not I should go to the ER tomorrow- my lungs are filling with fluid and my throat feels like it is closing in on itself. I cannot take a full breath. I'm sure as heck not going to ranking to get everyone there sick!I'm sure people might have something to add. Maybe there isn't much to add. This is more a plea than anything. Come on, please, have some sense, and remember that there are other people who go to class who deserve your consideration!Going to class sick is SELFISH!OSU! http://kyokushinchick.blogspot.com/"If you can fatally judo-chop a bull, you can sit however you want." -MasterPain, on why Mas Oyama had Kyokushin karateka sit in seiza with their clenched fists on their thighs. Martial Walrus
For some reason, this reminds me of the time some kid (I have no idea who) soiled themselves during class. I stayed after class, along with two instructors, to mop the entire floor with bleach. We also found something on the floor that someone identified as an intestinal worm, which would explain why this kid couldn't hold it in.I guess this is another example of "don't show up sick" "I have mastered the greatest technique of all: Being much bigger than my opponent." evergrey
Ewwww, yes I have seen poop on the mat, from a kid with psychological issues. Ugh. Groinstrike
Yup thats enough to make me want to go shower right this second. As a school teacher who is around these walking petri dishes everyday i can consider myself lucky that i haven't been sick for than i have. Yes, coming to class sick proves nothing except that your a inconsiderate person. Respect your training partners.
Martial Walrus
Walking petri dishes... that's a pretty good description of small children. And they're always sticky... On a related note, I'm just now getting over my second cold in three weeks. Living in a dorm seems to be a great way to spread/contract disease. evergrey
Haha, yeah they do. I remember one time I bathed in a pool full of ramen noodles. True story. Also there was this one time... it involved a lot of nacho cheese. http://kyokushinchick.blogspot.com/"If you can fatally judo-chop a bull, you can sit however you want." -MasterPain, on why Mas Oyama had Kyokushin karateka sit in seiza with their clenched fists on their thighs. sensei8
Great posts all. Great topic Ev.About 19 years ago, I came down with the flu/high temp. My assistants were not available right away to cover for me, so, I went to the dojo and taught three classes before help arrived. Lucky, I didn't infect anyone. Between classes, I laid down with the light off in my office. The longest three classes of my life, and I had to change my gi top before each class because I was dripping sweat...not a fun night for me. **Proof is on the floor!!! evergrey
Thank you Bob!Scary stuff! Heh, very scary. Thankfully we tend to have at least a sempai as a backup instructor if the two who normally teach are indisposed... but that wasn't always the case I'm sure. Sensei says that way back in the day, his Sensei would show up and teach sick. A couple times he didn't shop up and Sensei would run it. http://kyokushinchick.blogspot.com/"If you can fatally judo-chop a bull, you can sit however you want." -MasterPain, on why Mas Oyama had Kyokushin karateka sit in seiza with their clenched fists on their thighs. MasterPain
I have been polite and stayed home the last couple days. I'm just now starting to breath through both nostrils again. I hate colds. My fists bleed death. -Akuma
