Uechi ryu has 3 original kata with 5 bridging kata worked in between for a total of 8. If all you studied were the 3 original kata and left out the other 5 you would still have a strong understand of Uechi ryu.

In the Matusumura Seito Shorin Ryu that was taught to me we had 15 kata learned in this order (and yes, it is out of order for most other schools who have these katas):

10th Kyu: Pinan 1

9th Kyu: Pinan 2

8th Kyu: Matsumura Bo 1

8th Kyu: Seisan

7th Kyu: Wansu

6th Kyu: Bo 2 (this was a bo form that my instructor made)

6th Kyu: Naihanchi

5th Kyu: Naihanchi 2

5th Kyu: Ananku

4th Kyu: Ananku with Sai

3rd Kyu: Naihanchi 3

2nd Kyu: Pinan 3

1st Kyu: Passai Sho

1st Dan: Chinto

1st Dan: Passai Dai

Towards the end I'm a bit fuzzy on the order that the belts were supposed to learn it because my teacher taught some of the katas to us around 3rd Kyu that we weren't supposed to know until 1st Kyu or Dan. There are more forms in the system, but I don't know them.

We currently have a syllabus of 30 grading kata, from under 10yrs 9th Kyu through to Sandan. Some grades are required to perform 3 kata to pass their gradings. We have an additional 13 Kata that can be used for competition or extra grading kata for Sandan to demonstrate bunkai.

Mabuni Sensei (Shito-ryu) studied kata from all his instructors and thus passed them through to his students and was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of kata

Wow! That's a lot for kyu ranks! Do you have any more after shodan?

Hi Zaine,

The 30 Kata's are up to and including Sandan. For the breakdown you can check the list at our club site http://www.northernrivers-shukokai.com.au/training.html and select Shukokai Kata

I believe in some Ryu (schools) of Shito Ryu/Shukokai have upto 54 Separate Kata!!!.

I don't know how you can perfect 54 kata when I'm feeling to reduce my school's Kata from 18 to lesser amount say removing

Ashihara "Based" Kata are:

Taikyoku Kata 1-3 (my creations)

Shoshin Sho & Dai

Kihon Sho

Kumite Sho & Dai

Nage Sho & Dai

Goshin Dai

Jissen Dai

Traditional Kata are:

Naihanchi Kata - to be no longer practiced

Bassai Kata

Niseishi Kata - to be no longer practiced

Shichi Hoochi Kata (Chil Sung Ee Ro Hyung) - to be no longer practiced

Koryo Kata (WTF Poomsae) - to be no longer practiced

Goshin Jutsu Kata (Kodokan Judo)
