Great post, ShoriKid; great responses to sensei8's questions.

I think what Bob may have been getting at in his re-evaluation stance, is what is one doing to cause themselves to be placed in a situation like that. Its true that there are times when they just happen to you, but if they happen a lot, then it is likely due to either bad decision making, or through the profession one has chosen.

I think I'm too old to make bad decisions...mostly. If your daily activities put you in bad places and it's not job related you really need to re-evaluate that decision making process. If you're exposing yourself to above average risk, going to a bad location, on purpose you need to recognize that and up the awareness level accordingly.

I agree. Sometimes, it can't be helped, but I think usually, bad situations like that can be avoided, if prepared for. Things like knowing alterante routs to get to work or school, or even the grocery store ahead of time can help to avoid unfamiliar surroundings.

Running is the first and best option because streetfighting is dangerous, painful, and a haven for legal issues to hide. However if i had to fight I would do whatever is necessary. You can't say "He's gonna do this so then I'll do that." Until it goes down you just have to improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Use the appropriate use of force necessary to stop the threat. That's how we as Police Officers and Martial Artists train. Do whatever is necessary to stop the threat. If you live in a bad neighborhood, MOVE.

An important rule Martial Artists follow is to try and avoid situations where you put yourself at risk. Living in an area of violence, etc... doesn't help.

People tend to live there because they are poor. Instead of moving they should do what they can to help the community, but moving out of the neighborhood is not an option for many.

Since i get to make up the rules on my part, I spray them in the face with my wasp/hornet spray, then get out.

I think that that will work too.

In self defense, in MOST cases, fighting is at the end of a long chain of actions. The skillful martial artist attempts to disrupt the chain before it manifests in an actual attack. This can be done through awareness (not get into situations that are difficult), strategy, and, the best martial arts weapon of them all -- your voice. If you have exhausted all of those and still you are at a physical altercation, the focus should be on using decisive force, ending the fight as quickly as possible, and getting out of there. The longer a real fight takes, the higher the likelihood that you or your loved ones will get hurt.
