ad
i am going to join some Capioera classes and i wanted ask what would i be likely to xpect?, i know only that the moves are similar to of break dancing and involves complex acrobatical moves such as handstands, cartwheels, leg sweeps etc... i just wanted to know what i will be expecting in the first lessons they told me that you need a martial arts license so obviously it is an established martial art, but the venue is at a dance school, so is capoiera purely dance, or martial art, or a bith of both? Northren Ogre
Capioera is a mixture of dance and martial arts. When the Spanish occupied South America way back in the day, this style of martial art was created and it was disgiused as a dance in order to be able to train without persecution from the Spanish. http://prkickboxing.tripod.com

G95champ
I know it is taught in 2 forms now. 1. As a dance only..... 2. As a Martial Art...... I don't know much about it but Im sure you are in for a lot of work. (General George S. Bretty101
I went to a few lessons of capoira, mainly coz i wanted to learn the 'cool' moves. but like all martial arts there is a lot more to it, i found it a little too dancy and i didn't want to do all the instrument playing and singing. It's a great laught though, give it a try! Bretty

BlackI
I would say that it looks more like African Dance then Break Dancing, but I guess they both have the same roots. If you know anything about African Martial Arts you will be able to relate Capoeira to traditional African Dance. It seems that no one knows if this Style orginated in Africa or in Brazil. Either why it was created by the African Slaves, so it is African in Orgin. This Style is great. From what I understand about it, everything is done with their basic movements which is called the jinga. In search of the Temple of Light
The_Yak
From what I have heard it is very impractical for self-defense but it is a good workout and is supposed to be a lot of fun. My friend used to attend class and he said they didn't have sparring or a lot of "real life situation" moves but he enjoyed it quite a bit. BlackI
It had to be pretty practical for self-defense, because there were some revolts in Brazil with this Artist at the center of it and it was also out lawed by the Brazil Government... MonkeyNinja
Capoeria is really cool art to learn! What to expect: Lots of stretching. Balancing exercises/ Learning how to move to various beats and rythyms. SORE muscles, especially your shoulders and upper arms. You must be patient. As some of the moves take quite a while to learn.
