For those of you who train in arts where you primarily fight on the ground, do you use the guard position a lot? If so, do you usually use open or closed guard? Do you like to go for sweeps or submissions? Do you use the half guard a lot?

I'm pretty small, I only weigh 125-130, my instructor is like 165, so when I roll with him, he is usually totally dominating from the top! I find I have to use the guard just to keep safe! When I pull guard on bigger guys, I think I am much more aggressive...I like triangles and the kimura! I am pretty weak in the sweeps section - that is one of my main focus points right now! As far as the half guard, it's a great place to just sit and get a break for me. It's very hard to pass though!

It takes sacrifice to be the best.

There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy.

I can never pull the sweeps off on higher belts.

Sometimes if you have a bigger/better opponent in your guard and they are good at defending sweeps, you can sneak your way onto their back. Often when you try to roll them over during the sweep, you have one arm trapped. If they have good base in their legs, it's hard to roll them over, but since they have to be worried about being reversed, they sometimes aren't watching their back. You can grab their gi or neck, put your feet on the floor, and quickly hoist your way onto their back! Try it, I actually worked it once on a blue belt!

I was thinking of one at the end of October and one at the end of November. I will fight with the gi in both. They are pretty big competitions; all the good ones are in the fall. However, I don't know if my instructor wants us competing yet; he mentioned bringing us together to one (I am the only "real person" who has trained long enough, the rest are younger kids/teens). I am still deciding whether to fight in the women's division or the kids (under 17) division. The women's weight classes are bigger, and they sometimes have women of all experiences fighting each other. The kids they try to keep more divided, but really I'd be fighting guys probably a year or two younger because of my size, which I suppose isn't so bad since I roll with a lot of teenage guys so I'm used to it :P . Anyway, I'm still debating whether I should compete or watch.

No more sneaking around to big tourneys without my instructor knowing ! Tonight in class he mentioned both the tourneys I wanted to enter and he wants to bring me and maybe a few of the guys to check it out! One of them is without the gi, and allows leg submissions so I will have to start working without the gi (which I haven't done yet  ) and working on leg subs and defending them. The other one only allows ankle locks I think.

As far as standup, it's hard to do it because we practice in a small room. We have only had a few classes devoted to it, and I usually only work hip toss, double leg, and osoto gari....my brother is a wrestler and has been teaching me a little. Come tournament time I am sure my instructor will focus more on takedowns.

im a bjj student myself , i use the guard alot, i like to submit my opponent from it as well as sweep him onto his back, u can only use a sweep when u unhook your ankles in back which puts u in open guard.

half guard is just as bad as the guy on top of you, either put him in full guard or get up, cuz thats a bad position, im only 140 lbs like you so take my advice

sweeps should be relatively to do even against huge guys, im only 16 and all the adults love to pick on me, so i put them in my guard ,and sweep them, if your are having trouble with your sweeps, than work on them , because they are a very important part of your arsenal, where are you studying bjj, what is your instructors name?

ask your instructor to teach you more attacks from the guard, such as the omaplata and different angles to apply your armbar from, this should help alot ,

i use guard a lot, this is one of the positions where i feel more confident, when i roll with guys with no experience y try more to sweep them, but when guys with more experience most time i look for submissions.

i dont use half-guard
