So a young kid has transferred to our karate school from an ATA school. Our school sponsored open tournament is coming up Tonight I overhear his mom and our school's owner discussing our tournament. I hear our owner say that there will be some taekwondo practioners in the tourney but not ATA.

This struck me as odd. Is ATA not taekwondo?

Different ruleset and training.

A little bit like saying "They'll be playing Poker. But they're playing five card, not texas holdem; that guy has only ever done texas holdem and they don't play the same."*

*I don't actually know squat about poker, so I probably have at least some terminology wrong here.

Its just a type of TKD, just like Shotokan is a type of Karate. So it'd be like your instructor saying there will be Karate students at your tournament but they wont be any Wado ryu students.

I always used to explain the different TKD styles to friends as it being like rugby; you have rugby union and rugby league. Same game, slightly different rules.

The American Taekwondo Association (ATA) is one of the largest martial arts organizations in the United States. We teach Songahm Taekwondo. Having started in Olympic-style (W.T.F.) Taekwondo, I can honestly say that I prefer ATA Taekwondo. I find the forms to be more challenging than traditional forms.
