So how do you guys pronounce the "Tae" part of Tae Kwon Do?

There seems to be a lot of variation, especially with Westerners mispronouncing it. For years when I first started training we used to pronounce it wrong and even now I still have to mentally correct myself each time...

In Korean, Tae is written with the letter ᅢ, which is transliterated as ae and makes a sound something like a "ay" or "eye." So, pronouncing it like the word "tie" is more accurate than "teh." To be pronounced teh, it would have to be written with the letter ㅔ, which is pronounced like the e in cafe.

I pronounce it as in "tie." Mostly because that's how it's always been pronounced to me by many people including Tae Kwon Do people, but also because (being a Latin student) the Romans pronounced the "ae" as a long "I."

"tie" "k-won" "dough" - this is how I would pronounce it (I believe this to be the common pronunciation in England) however in Korea it would be "tey"-"goo-an/gwan"-"tow/dow"

Yeah I was brought up pronouncing it "Tie/Ty" and still tend to say it this way but have been corrected to say "Tay" instead (by a Korean speaker and by masters within the style). I do sometimes wonder when (and where) the change in pronunciation came..

It's "teh" "kwun" "doe"

eh, uh, oh.

Having spent a year in Korea, it's like nails on chalkboard to hear mispronunciations of some words. My wife is also fluent, so I get constant corrections. I commend you for looking for clarity on this. Many either assume they are right, or just don't care if they are wrong. Either way, it's interesting to see how some people butcher the language.
