Ohanamalu6 Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 I practice Chung do Kwan Tae Kwon Do, and teach it here in the City of Buffalo, NY.It seems like most styles of TKD that I see are the KTF/olympic style. Our style is much more closely connected to Shotokan and Won Kuk Lee's "Korean Karate" more than the heavy-kicking, bouncy styles.Anybody out there? bushido_man96 Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 Our school has been referred to as a Chung Do Kwan style. We do the ITF forms, but our sparring is with Olympic rules, but we don't spar with the same flair of the Olympic stylists. We are more of a forms-based school than a sparring based school. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
DWx Posted August 11, 2011 Posted August 11, 2011 I'm ITF so sort of descended from the Chung Do Kwan but in reality its probably radically different now..Welcome to the forums btw "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius
Ohanamalu6 Posted August 12, 2011 Author Posted August 12, 2011 Yeah, what we do is really really close to Shotokan, which is why we end up oscillating between calling it Karate and TKD. What's in a name, anyhow? Philip BarrMy School: https://www.ohanamalu.orgMy Blog: https://www.kickpunchlove.com
Harlan Posted August 13, 2011 Posted August 13, 2011 Not a lot of Chung Do Kwan 'out there'. Old style. My teachers trained and taught CDK before moving onto Goju. We istill train kobudo with the folks that stayed in CDK, and they are still VERY similar to Shotokan.I practice Chung do Kwan Tae Kwon Do, and teach it here in the City of Buffalo, NY.It seems like most styles of TKD that I see are the KTF/olympic style. Our style is much more closely connected to Shotokan and Won Kuk Lee's "Korean Karate" more than the heavy-kicking, bouncy styles.Anybody out there? Leaves fall.
bushido_man96 Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 There's good reason why not a lot of Chung Do Kwan is out there. When Choi basically absorbed the other Kwans into his KTA (later ITF), they all kind of faded. Some guys stayed true to what they did, but I'd say that's the reason you don't see much "true" Chung Do Kwan any more. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
wild_weasel Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 My instructor teaches ITF Taekwondo Chung do Kwan. Ive not long got my yellow tag belt so i cant say much about it. But my master Hay Harris is a 6th DanMy brother -in law who is also studying with me has just told me that Chung Do Kwan translates to "blue wave School" Your teacher opens the door , but you have to walk through it.
bushido_man96 Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 That's correct. I think anymore, though, its become a title that's followed along more than being a true indication of actual Chung Do Kwan descent. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
IcemanSK Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I'm a student of GM Edwars Sell (9th Dan Chung Do Kwan & Kukkiwon). He is a student of GM Park, Hae Man. GM Park is a student of GM Uhm Woon Kyu. GM Uhm was a student of of GM Lee, Won Kuk: the CDK founder.I am a 4th Dan Chung Do Kwan. We do a few of the old school CDK forms (which are actually Karate kata: Bassai Dai & Empi) but, for the most we follow the Kukiwon curiculum & the Tae Guek poomsae. That doesn't mean, however, that we follow Olympic-style sparring, necessarily. So schools under GM Sell, some do not. Being a good fighter is One thing. Being a good person is Everything.
