I was told to wash them with hot water and put them in a dryer for a few cycles ( otherwise never put your gi in dryer). Since Tokaido and Shureido are high quality (and expensive) I would also consider taking them to a tailor for better adjustments.

hmm, that's funny, usually the Japanese brands I buy shrink up nicely. It could be that because you bought a higher-end brand that they pre-shrunk the fabric. In that case, aside from trying what luca61 said, there's not much you can do.

On the brighter side, if you really need it that much smaller, a gi that is tailored smaller is going to look a lot better than a gi that has been shrunken and is bunching at the seams.

Strange, I'm 178cm but I have to buy a 190 or a 200 for a better fit!!!

I always go a size larger and shrink my gi on purpose, I'm tall and thin 183cm 80kg so a 6 usually fits great after a hot wash and a dry cycle..

It usually depends on the makers. But they usually warn you about it. From my experience, the Gi will shrink the first 2 times you boil them. Thereafter, they will shrink extremely minimal. You probably won't notice shrinkage thereafter until after 1-2 years of washing.

In other words, boil twice. If it's still too long, use scissors.
