Montana Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I guess if yoyu're running your school under the permission and support of your instructor, and without his assistance you aren't allowed to run a school...then I'd say he can charge you anything he likes. If that's all he's charging you, I'd say you're getting away pretty lucky. If you don't want to stand behind our troops, please..feel free to stand in front of them.Student since January 1975---4th Dan, retired due to non-martial arts related injuries.

wayneshin Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Its definitely pretty normal andprobablythe main reason why people form their own schools.Depends on what your geting for our money,eg Insurance,Curriculum ie Intellectual Property, Advertising and promotional items,Professional memberships,Goodwill of school name. Does the Instructor attend the gradings. If you are getting these things then you need to determine if they are worth what he is taking away.We have structure in our organisation where the umrella organisation is non profit and takes a percentage of grading fees and cover things such as those mentioned above. each individual club is then run as its own entity (if that makes sense).

Wastelander Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 From what you describe, if he isn't doing the testing I don't think he should be charging you testing fees. Then again, I'm still just a kyu-rank assistant and I try not to get involved in politics. It just seems like if you are handling all of the business and all of the training and all of the testing then he isn't doing anything to earn 50% of your testing fees. All he did was train you, which you've already paid for, I assume. One thought would be to slightly increase tuition and stop charging testing fees Kishimoto-Di | 2014-Present | Sensei: Ulf KarlssonShorin-Ryu/Shinkoten Karate | 2010-Present: Yondan, Renshi | Sensei: Richard Poage (RIP), Jeff Allred (RIP)Shuri-Ryu | 2006-2010: Sankyu | Sensei: Joey Johnston, Joe Walker (RIP)Judo | 2007-2010: Gokyu | Sensei: Joe Walker (RIP), Ramon Rivera (RIP), Adrian RiveraIllinois Practical Karate | International Neoclassical Karate Kobudo Society
ps1 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Please clarify. Is your instructor signing your student's rank certificates? Is your instructor participating in your student's tests? "It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenius."
still kicking Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Jassling, I am wondering, what is your rank? Are you eligible to teach independently? It sounds like you already are anyway, as your instructor (or is it previous instructor) does not seem to be very involved. Is he affiliated with an organization, or independent? If he is not affiliated with an organization, and your ranks do not need to be approved by them, and is also not participating in your testing process, I do not see why you need to be giving him money at this point. That's my opinion on it.

sensei8 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I hold a second degree black belt in the system I teach. My instructor does sign the certificates, though there is no reason I can't issue my own. My instructor is not present for, or have anything to do with my students testing. My instructor runs an independent dojo. He is affiliated with a national organization, but it does not sanction the ranking of my students. Why not? Contact the organization on your own, be polite and respectful, explain to then the situation, and then see if there's a way for them to certify your students. Cutting out the middle-man is business 101. It's not personal; it's business.Good luck!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
