HarvesterofSorrow Posted August 12, 2002 Posted August 12, 2002 to those people that pratice both--Do you punch with a vertical(WC) fist, or a horizontal(TKD) fist? Just wondering 'cause I practice Wing Chun and I might start TKD under Jae Kim here in tucson az. Anyone heard of him?
omnifinite Posted August 12, 2002 Posted August 12, 2002 I was taught to punch with the fist at 45 degrees. Guess I'm somewhere in between? 1st Dan HapkidoColored belts in Kempo and Jujitsu

inyctrotter Posted August 17, 2002 Posted August 17, 2002 I study both arts and I punch with vertical fist when im using the art wing chun and i punch horizontal fist for TKD. But both of my masters said that both punches are acceptable. So I just the punch that the art uses...its less confusing.
rabid hamster Posted August 18, 2002 Posted August 18, 2002 I feel a lot better punching with vertical fists.. but does one have more advantage over the other? It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
omnifinite Posted August 18, 2002 Posted August 18, 2002 I feel a lot better punching with vertical fists.. but does one have more advantage over the other? If it feels better there's probably a reason for it. With our punches the fists are at 45 degrees. The mechanics of the arm can allow for more effective strikes that way. I don't know if they're more or less effective than vertical punches... but I would think more (in a way it might be a compromise between the two... best of both worlds). From what I've been told, in the past in the orient the kids learning Karate as part of their schooling were taught to punch with a horizontal fist just so it would be less likely that they'd seriously hurt each other. Plus at 45 degrees you can hit gall bladder 24 and liver 14 just right at the same time . 1st Dan HapkidoColored belts in Kempo and Jujitsu
