The formalities of Karate I believe are wonderful for maintaining order and structure in a kid's class. We just don't have time to run one anymore. There are TKD gyms in the area that will take them anyway. I still bow off the floor and when passing training weapons. That gets you looked at funny at MMA gyms. Put me in a traditional setting and I feel like one of the unwashed masses.

Also, while I think martial arts have done a great deal to strengthen my character, that has been a natural effect of hard work. How does one add much of a philosophy when your class consists of people of various religious, social and political values? Seems like a good way to alienate one another. We just refuse to teach violent people.

As for age - Karate can be practised at any age - I started at 39 and train with a pensioner and several kids amongst others.

As for styles this might be limited by the clubs in your area unless you are willing to travel, I started with Wada Ryu but moved areas, after a break I joined a Shotokan Club. I didn't mind starting again and i'm close to Black belt but although its a major mile stone I am now seeing it as a new beginning.

It may take a while to gain a passion with Karate but hopefully you will find it eventually as its more than just punching and kicking.

Good luck!
