Belts what to where at a different school?

Recommended Posts

Question, If you are already a Dan grade in your own school or current School and you wish to cross train or attend another school, what belt would/should you wear?

I carry a separate bag for "visits" with a Plain Black and a White belt in it.

Now in my school attending black belts are asked to wear their Belts, but other schools have insisted I wear a white, especially when the Instructor is a lower grade than I am.

What are your thoughts and rules for visiting Dan Grades?

Ask the Chief Instructor of the school that you're planning to visiting before showing up and assuming.

At my dojo and our Hombu it is like this:

**Visiting...Wear your Yudansha BUT ask permission FIRST from the Chief Instructor. Why? Courtesy/Respect/Etc.

**Becoming a student...wear a white belt. Why? All new students wear a white belt no matter your experience.

**Student Transfer...wear a white belt at first until the Chief Instructor evaluates you, then, wear the belt you've been evaluated to, and if you've continued training, you'll possibly wear your current belt depending on the Chief Instructor

:)

we were always taught if we were going into another studio to train we were not to wear our uniform or belts. we were to start off with a white belt if we were to cross train in that style. And if we were just visiting to try it out we wore work out pants and a t shirt. Now for our studio well we perferd you come in with no rank on if not trained in our style until the grandmaster evaluated you. also if you were trained in our style you would also have to be re evaluated before you received rank.

I would just check with the instructor of the school I would be attending. Take both, and if you don't get to talk to them prior about it, just don't put a belt on until you talk to them about it.

Wherever I go I wear my white belt when I visit or even start a new style. It's respectful to everyone, and my white belt is quite dirty so everyone knows I am not really a whitebelt any how.

I find myself dabbling into a lot of different martial arts styles, some I've been awarded rank in, but I don't feel as if I deserve them.

It depends, we crosstrain with a few different schools, but we are all acquainted and in the same association together. So when we get together everyone just wears their black/brown belts or whatever.

Now if i were to visit a BJJ or Karate school and was not very well acquainted with the instructor, i would definately wear a whitebelt.

Thank you guys, the common census is that a white belt is definitely must when attending other schools.

Would wearing a white belt with a black tab(s) be ok as this has been suggested too (for example a 2nd Dan would wear a White belt with 2 black tabs)

My thoughts exactly. I've had other instructors come into my dojo to learn as a student. I ask them to wear a white belt because they are white belts/beginners inb this system, therefore their blackbelts have no bearinbg in my class. I do allow them toline up with respect to their higher rank at the beginning and end of the class.

I wouldn't, unless approved by the head of the dojo in advance.
