sensei8 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I just can't remember the style, I thought it was Tang Soo Do, but I doubt that, but the translation was... The Way Of The Flowering Hand Anyone ever hear of that one? Can't say as I recall it either, Bob. I do think I've heard of it before. Is that not "Hwarang Do" Close, but Hwarang Do translates into "The Way Of The Flowering Knights". However, I was a jbb when I first heard it and I could've replaced "Knights" with "Hand". Of course, there is the fact that I'm much older and my memory isn't what it use to be. Ah ok. Knew it had the flowering part in there. "Hwa"-something then Maybe "Hwa-Soo Do" as I think (correct me if I'm wrong) the "soo" part of Tang Soo Do and Kong Soo Do is "hand".Oooohhhh, I like that, and it bears on me to do some quick little research. Danielle, great point!! **Proof is on the floor!!!
moriniuk Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Doesn't 'Tang' refer to the Tang Dynasty meaning China?Tang Soo Do - China Hand WaySimilar to the original meaning of Karate - China Hand.Giving a style a cool sounding oriental name seems to suggest a little bit more credibility than something like Johns Smith's school of the empty hand.Just as in South East Asian countries and probably Japan and China etc they call English language schools things like Oxford, Cambridge, Westminster etc School of English. Black Dragon sounds better than Pink Dragon, but I did once train at a Thai Boxing gym in Thailand called Pink Flamingo! https://www.bkkmuaythai.piczo.com

wagnerk Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Shotokan came from Shoto which was Funakoshi's pen-name meaning pine-waves or wavy pines and kan which means house, so "House of the Wavy Pines" or pine waves house - depending on how you translate -Ken Tang Soo Do: 3rd Dan '18Shotokan Karate: 2nd Dan '04
