Karate in combination with other MA's

Karate+ Judo, Karate+Jiu Jitsu, Karate+BJJ, Karate+Wrestling

I think some form of grappling would be the logical compliment to karate. Hopefully your karate would be enough in most self defense situations. I know I would feel safer on my feet even if I had strong ground fighting ability. If I was to be in a street fight, I would almost certainly be in the legal and moral right. Therefore I would want to be on my feet and visible to any surrounding people. I also prefer to keep a good view of my opponent in front of me. If I start wrestling some thug in between a couple of parked cars, I wont necessarily see if he goes to his pocket for a weapon. Plus, if he has someone with him, it would be all to easy for his buddy to stomp my head even if I was totally dominating on the ground. But in the end; I think it would be better to have great ground skills and not need them, than to need ground skills and not have them. I just don't have time to learn a second martial art. Maybe after I get my blackbelt.

If one has the time to invest and an available teacher, Greco-Roman style wrestling gives you ability to clinch, and from there the ability to gain a takedown. Controlling where a fight takes place is something that wrestlers will always have an advantage at, and Greco tends to be much safer than its collegiate counterpart.

Karate and Judo are a terrific combination in my opinion.

I agree. I believe Karate contains what is missing from Judo and visa versa. Having studied both, I believe that Judo unlocked much kata for me.

judo/jiu-Jitsu, then, later, after a solid base, say brown or black belt, of judo/bjj, take on muay Thai or free style kickboxing that allows kicks to legs and elbows to face.

I hear boxing's very useful, but I know that kicking to leg's very useful for sport or for self-defense.

p.s. 45ACP pistol (obtain a CCW Permit, if you can), 308 rifle, and 12 gauage shotgun should be your weapons styles.

I don't disagree with you, but why wait until you have a brown or black belt in Judo or Jiu-Jitsu? Why not start as soon as you can?

It probably depends on what you are getting at your school. I would have thought BJJ a reasonable suggestion.

Dependant on your level you should be learning throws, sweeps and takedowns as well as some limb control and locks.

I don't believe there is really any genuine ground fighting in karate. IMHO you shouild never take a fight to the ground anyway. Just be able to cope if it takes you there.
