Actually my original gi is so worn out it is rather comfy. I wear it to bed sometimes. ( ) The one I have now is comfortable too. I wear a black gi. My whole dojo does. No other color is really accepted. Eventually my higher ranks when I have a school will be able to pick from black, white, blue, or red. Lower ranks will always were black though.

I think the gi makes a good uniform for a martial artist. Most of them allow for flexiblity and they are usually durable.

The only thing I don't like about the gis that we have to wear is that they are long-sleeved. That is stupid, because most people's sleeves just get in the way. Personaly, mine completely cover my fist, and it's dangerous because fingers and such can get caught on an opponent's gi.

Everyone at my club rolls their sleeves up. I do it, my sensei does it, the head sensei does it. But we still have to use the long-sleeved ones and just roll them up all the time.

Dokter, have you ever spoken with your instructor about the possibility of three-quarter-sleeve gi tops? Perhaps it isn't something he often thinks about....bringing your concern to his attention sounds like a good idea!

It kinda fell apart at the end  but was pretty serious for a while...and luckily that has never happened to me!"

Hee hee, that was good LOL. Well I have to say that pre-treating stains before washing does work (thank God  )

I like my dobak. Its comfy. Like I said before, I wear it as PJ's often :D I go home after class, take my belt off, and go to bed (when I take night classes) :D Or I will sleep in the pants and a t-shirt. My dobak pants get worn to bed often. As far as in class, I don't have a problem with wearing a dobak, except when it's really hot and it sticks to me ggggrrrrrr.

three60roundhouse,

they are quite clear that we have to wear a 'traditional' gi. I am friends with the president of the organization so I can talk to him about it I suppose.

I never actually thought about questioning it...but rolling up my sleeves all the time is annoying.

Hey Doktor, it cost me 8 bucks at the local dry cleaners to have them hem up my sleeves to exactly where I wanted them. Even better if you have a friend with a sewing machine. Even if it would be somehow inappropriate to bring them up to 3/4 length, there should be no issue with bringing them up far enough so you don't have to roll them up, that used to drive me crazy!

Our style looks at the uniform as symbolic to armor - I don't think anyone would ever just wear them around. Plain white, always ironed, no patches or anything.

I ususally wear a proforce ultra-heavyweight, as when you sweat they tend to fall away from you. As the dojo is not air conditioned it is an issue, and not very fun given the hot summer we have had!

The only complaint I have is that the manufacturers of the uniforms seem to have some weird ideas about how tall people are. I've had to hem every single pair of pants and every single top I've every used, and I would consider myself pretty average build @ 5'10".

Thanks

I like the fact that my dojo is not air conditioned, teaches you to train in all conditions :)
