An interesting article on the US Navy's railgun, which I recall goes all the way back to President Reagan's Star Wars initiative. He spoke of using different devices like this in space, but though it's not been developed that way, it packs a wallop.

BTW, a railgun was used in Transformers 2 and, sure enough, fired from a US Navy ship, a destroyer.
