Jiu Jitsu gis tend to be very expensive and very important to the practitioner. Are the uniforms as important to other styles? There tends to be a real attachment to certain brands. I myself have worn strictly Koral gis for the past 6 years and only recently ventured out to OTM and Vulcan, both of which I am very pleased with. I have a bright yellow Vulcan. It's hilarious and awesome!

Judging by the number of posts we have regarding gi's, I would use yes, they are very important haha. I am pretty attached to a few brands. For my Okinawan Karate, Satori is the brand I like. They make made to measure gis. For WTF style Taekwondo, Mooto dobok seem to be tops these days. They've edged out Adidas in my book. For Kyokushin, Isami are definitely top quality. There's a guy who sells from Singapore as well, but I have yet to get my hands on one. That's why I started the thread on how to choose a new do-gi. I know that BJJ doesn't use that term perse, but if you have something to contribute, that would be great. Maybe we could sticky it eventually, so ALL gi/uniform related questions/comments can go there.

I've never really had a preference, but I would like to get measured and have one done personally. Because of the size of my legs, I have to get size 7 or something like that, and then get it hemmed. So, I pay higher dollar of a gi that I don't use half of.

LOL I scanned back through the topics and you are right I suppose I could have just jumped into one. What makes a good gi for stand up styles. Obviously for me durability is one factor and beyond that it is fit and comfort and they are separate for me. Fit for me refers to how much skirt the jacket has, as I like the bottom of it to just barely stick out under my belt for competition purposes. The more material you have the more they have to use against you. A Koral A3 is about like a custom fit.

For a stand up style, it really depends on what you're doing competition wise. For kata, a really heavy weight uniform made out of 16oz canvas is ideal. It gives that "snap" people are always looking for.

For heavy contact sparring, a medium weight is good. It "absorbs" a little bit of the impact, kind of, and it'll soak up sweat well, which is the most important. Light weight ones just get sticky. A medium weight will also allow freedom of movement a heavy weight uniform won't.

For WTF TKD, they have specially made uniforms that are high-tech fabric. They are sweat wicking, cooling, etc. They're ultra-light, but durable. They've made similar uniforms for WKF games of tag as well.

If you want to post a bunch of gi reviews on BJJ gis the thread I started is here

There isn't a whole lot of choice for doboks for ITF Taekwon-Do, because of all the logos and stuff we need on them. And it is important we have them on. I know there are smaller brands that do them like Top Pro and Top Ten (probably never heard of them) but in most cases people get them off of their association/school because usually the school puts their own patches on too. I hate the ones our association has. The first few I had were quite good then they changed the design. The latest one I have fits horribly and the evener newer design looks worse.

The ITF I'm in did bring out a redesign that is now the official dobok to wear to official events (tournament, seminars etc.) which is made by only one company so you have to import them in. But someone obviously put some real effort into the design as they're nearly perfect! I usually choose to wear them over our association one. Only problem I have is I'm halfway between sizes and they don't seem to make a half size so my trousers are always an inch too long. Aside from the fact that its obviously making this one company a lot of money, I think its great that everyone competing only wears one brand of dobok because no-one gets a slight edge because they can afford a better quality practice suit to wear. Everyone's has the same snap to it for forms and same weight

But I don't suppose any of this is relevant to anyone else on here... In answer to the question are they important, yes they are for us. Its more of a uniform, everyone's the same when they wear the same dobok.
