I am so glad you asked that question, Danielle! When we had a teenager who was officially an assistant instructor/Jo Kyo Nim, I spoke with him about this. He and I both wore groing protectors. I suggested to him that he speak with the other males (it's really almost all male students in the dojang), but just let our teacher, a woman, know he was doing it. He said he would but never did.

I believe that it should be a policy at least for teens and up that it's expected. Just because it isn't a tournament, that doesn't mean that it isn't necessary.

Do you think that I should approach my teacher, or would that be too much? She's certainly aware that males need to protect that area, but has left it up to the individual so far.

I'd mention it. In today's society, it might save her a lawsuit.
