Another pet peeve I have is having all ranks in one class doing the same technique...I know small schools don't have a choice to have a class with different ranks; however, having the red belt do a front kick a million times with the white belts, will just bore them!!! Why not give something more challenging to the higher ranks to spark their interest, while the white belts do the front kick?

This is where you say white belts, one strike per count, red belts four strikes per count kiai on every strike and don't sacrifice technique for speed.

Explanation = tell what it is and why to do it

Demonstration = show how to do it..break it down

Action = have them do it

Correction =change any bad habits

Motivation = make it fun

Review = make sure they understand what they just learned

Don't always try to find things that the student is doing wrong. Maybe their kick sucks but they have their hands up. Tell them good job on keeping the hands up then give them a quick correction on their kick then tell them good job again.

Also, yes you kind of need to be yourself when you teach but just like learning new kicking and striking techniques you need to learn different teaching styles. You will always find someone who can put anther spin on teaching that you never thought of.

I guess this is where you put your own personal saying to make everyone go "Hmm" .

"The style a person learns doesn't matter if they don't have a clue as how to apply it."

Sqawman brings up a good point. There are many different learning styles and different ways to teach a technique according to them. What one person doesn't get another one may....experiment with many different ways to explain and demonstrate and you'll be a better, more versatile teacher!
