sentry Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 If you were a strict atheist what calender would you go by?
rabid hamster Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 The one everyone else goes by. It'll make life easier... It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
ZeRo Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 the right one. which in england is the chritian calendar.
G95champ Posted July 31, 2002 Posted July 31, 2002 This is what I find so great about atheist. To be an atheist it means you do not believe in any God. Well to believe in no God is the same as believing in a God. Thus it is impossible to be an atheist. By believing in nothing you believe in something. I do agree that you would go by the Christian calendar because the entire Westren world is now most of the East is based upon it. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
chh Posted August 1, 2002 Posted August 1, 2002 You can believe in nothing, but that makes you agnostic, not atheist. I don't believe there is a god, I don't believe there is not a god, I'm cool with not knowing either way. According to my dad, agnostic = "wishy-washy." That's me! But, the atheists I do know are not on some sort of anti-god crusade, is that what you mean by being a "strict" atheist? They wouldn't stop using the calendar any more than they'd stop handling American money or insist on coming to work Christmas day. I've never met anyone like what you're suggesting...
sentry Posted August 1, 2002 Author Posted August 1, 2002 you know what? I meant to post this topic in the general discussion.
Don Gwinn Posted August 5, 2002 Posted August 5, 2002 G95, I'm sure this is the response you were waiting for, but please explain how believing that there is no God is the same thing as believing in God. I should probably warn you that I have a low tolerance for doublespeak, so rationalizations like "well, it all requires faith, so it's really the same, so I assume we'll see you in church on Sunday" are not going to work well. ____________________________________* Ignorant Taekwondo beginner.http://www.thefiringline.com
G95champ Posted August 5, 2002 Posted August 5, 2002 god is basically anything you believe in. so to believe in no god is the same as believing is somethings thus that becomes your god. Yeah that may be a bit out there but everyone believes in something. I mean do you think we just poped up here? If so that is your god. Do you believe in big bang? that is your god. Do you think the rock outside is magic? Thats your god. Do you think there is nothing in the world that can help you but a cold beer, tv, and sexy woman? Well if so that is your god. God is what we put first in our life that gives us a reason for being. It don't have to be one of the great monotheistic gods. Which is what most refer to when talking about being an atheist. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
