ps1
Thanks for the well structured reply ps1, you have some great points in there and im sorry if i came across brash or arrogant! Perhaps if i rephrased it, the meaning i was trying to get across was in a street situation say a general practitioner of both arts not nessessarily a BB, the complexity of a certain throw or submission hold seems a great deal harder to achive than a punch, kick or scrape from a standing position, now there are obviously going to be variables in every situation but i was thinking more of a fight outside a bar i saw recently one guy tried to throw the other over his hip (forgive the lack of terminology i havent studied Judo) the second guy reached over his shoulders and dug his fingers into his eyes. While not pleasent to watch, it made me think about this very discussion and all the things that could go wrong in a street scenario. On an ending note, i would love to study at a BJJ or Judo school for some extra experience, unfortunatly there isnt one within about 2 hours drive from me (i live in the countryside) and my work keeps me tied down As i said in the beginning however, thank you for giving me a different side to the discussion and something to think about! You're welcome...glad you didn't take my post the wrong way. I see where you're coming from now. It certainly sounds like the guy you saw was both not very good at judo and not a very well trained fighter. Of course, who really is. If a BJJ or good judo school ever gets close to you, certainly take the time to train with them. I think that's the best way to understand what the guy was doing wrong. As far as the technical variables of throwing/grappling being more complicated than basic striking and kicking. You're probably right. While the stragegies of stand fighting take much longer to get skilled in using, the techniques themselves are much simpler. I see your point here. Soheir
Great video, but not that good.. Why would it be the ultimate martial art?I don't know much about judo, But would like to hear what makes it so different/special from all the other martial arts? “One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.” -Anthony Robbins
Fish
Had my first Judo lesson on Saturday (after 7 years karate). Suddenly, I realised, I know nothing!! Doing groundwork and the yellow belts were all over me. The sensei just lay on me and challenged me to move him onto his back! Great fun. It's when you know that you know nothing and don't do anything to resolve the issue, that it becomes a problem. To be honest, I feel like that all the time, and it motivates me. I'd be more worried by the person who claims that he knows everything! lol "What is a wedding? Webster's defines a wedding as the process of removing weeds from ones garden." wolverine uskf
I love the grappling arts the most, even though most of my experience is in the striking arts, and at 5'11" 250lbs i can hit, but i would rather be punched or kicked, than land on concrete from 4-6 feet in the air. Standing you have to block and strike, if the guy is on the ground with the wind knocked out of him from being thrown, you can just walk away. kozushi
I'm a judo black belt, 22 years of experience, lots of trophies, in BJJ too (trophies, no belt in BJJ.) Judo is SO MUCH FUN! It is full intensity ALL THE FIGHT. You don't let up and probe or poke in with punches or whatever, it's a continuous wrenching and crushing of your opponent. As for ultimate martial art, in what sense? If it were ultimate, I wouldn't be enjoying doing Shotokan katas in my basement, kickboxing, fencing, kendo and frequenting BJJ tourneys. Definitely there isn't anything as intense as judo, or as fast paced as fencing. There is nothing as plodding and tactical as BJJ, and nothing as difficult as kendo. Judo though is special to me because YOU NEVER LET UP. There is no lull, it is 100% intense, 100% of the match! I LOVE IT!!!!!!I don't think Karate was originally conceived of as a "striking" art. The katas seem to me to be more a combination of grappling and weaponry moves, which happen to be done, maybe for convenience of training, without actually holding the weapons or another person, in your hands. 2010: Budokan Judo Senior (18yrs+) Champion. bushido_man96
Kata's aren't really weapons based. There are different Kobudo katas that are weapon's focused. For the most part, Karate kata's are based on striking and some joint manipulation/tuite. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com
