Diamond Snake Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 My 15 year old son got his black belt and I was looking at it and there are Japanese characters on it. I'm assuming it is Japanese and I'm assuming this is a 'normal' black belt from Golden Tiger Martial Arts supply store. Does anybody know what the writing says?
RJCKarate Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 I can't tell you what the writing actually says (because I haven't seen it), however the most common thing is to have your style name on one side, and the person's name on the other. If your son doesn't know what it says, I'd suggest for him to ask his instructor, as it is his belt.If you uploaded an image though, I'm sure someone on this forum could help you.Cheers, Reece Cummings Kodokan Cummings Karate Dojo 5th Dan, Matsubayashiryu (Shorinryu) Karatedo Kobujutsu 2nd Dan, Yamaneryu Kobudo

conrad665 Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 I think the Katakana characters are : Kurenmakasu, but they are backwards as Cable Dog said. I don't know the last two kanji under it.
Diamond Snake Posted June 19, 2010 Author Posted June 19, 2010 Thank You - I'll find out. What does Kurenmakasu mean? I looked it up on google and didn't get anything.
shujika Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 The "kanji" say's "Okinawa Te Budokan" "If your breakin' a sweat, your doin' something wrong"(If your really Bored)http://ryute.blogspot.com
shujika Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 the "katakana" is Ka re nMa ka suI'm "presuming" "Karen Marks" followed by "Shodan"As stated previously, The katakana is backwards (to be read from the "other" side of the belt. JohnASE Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 the "katakana" is Ka re nMa ka suI'm "presuming" "Karen Marks" followed by "Shodan"As stated previously, The katakana is backwards (to be read from the "other" side of the belt. Most embroidery is stitched all the way through the belt. It shows correctly on the front side and reversed on the back side. Every once in a long while, an embroiderer will flip it by mistake. I'd guess it's just flipped in your pic."Karen Marks" doesn't sound like the name of a 15 year old boy. Maybe your son's belt got switched with someone else's. This happens all too frequently. Or maybe your son's name just sounds similar. Translating Western names into katakana isn't exact. From the little piece of the label I can see, I'd guess it's a Tokaido belt, not a "regular" GTMA belt. In case you're not familiar with it, Tokaido is a premium brand. The logo looks like it might be the JKA logo, and I'm pretty sure most JKA belts in the USA are Tokaido brand. If so, it should say Tokaido lower on the label. Oh, and GTMA does sell Tokaido belts. John - ASE Martial Arts Supplyhttps://www.asemartialarts.com
