I've read some interesting topics on this before.

If you were to give your karate instructor a 'thankyou' present (for whatever it may be), what would you give?

Additionally, if you had a high-ranked visiting instructor or you visited a high-ranking instructor, what present would you give?

Hopefully there will be some interesting replies!

I have been thinking of giving my teacher, when it seems appropriate, a framed calligraphy of the kanji for "gratitude".

If there's a reason to give a gift, it's usually a knife.

That seems to be a purely American custom, most places in Europe would see that as being either symbolic of cutting the friendship or giving bad luck. My Japanese Iaido teacher hated the idea of giving anything less than a top-quality hand forged katana as it either symbolised the order to commit suicide (small knives) or that the recipient was only deserving of a "toy" sword, an insult in either case.

He much preferred a good bottle of single malt Whisky...

Maybe it's the elementary school teacher in me, but if someone told me to come up with a gift, I'd give the visiting person a club t-shirt that all the students signed...

I would probably get my instructor a gift certificate to a nice resturaunt so he could enjoy an evening out with his wife on me. :-)

You wouldn't think about going with him to enjoy a meal together?

Surely a gift for both, as you could enjoy sampling some of this persons experience.

For my boys' teacher's  birthday each year, I buy a box of chocolates and have them sign a birthday card, and they give the gift and card to her.

It's was kind of cute this week, watching the three of them munch on the chocolates. (I lucked out and got a piece, too. )

well one of my senseis is a real lover of things Newfoundland. so I'll probably get him a small something with our flag on it for christmas. :)

The other sensei is a cat lover - so I know what to give him. :)

Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.

You don't have to blow out someone else's candle in order to let your own flame shine.
