BlueDragon1981 Posted July 23, 2002 Posted July 23, 2002 We need 15 katas (might be a couple more my mind is not recalling at this time) Definitions for all lower ranks (over 200 items in the book) Self Defense Against. (Waza) Knife attack Gun Club Straight Punch Roundhouse Wrist Grabs Bearhugs Kicks Choke Holds (some of the above also have different categories.) All together our test runs about 3 to 5 hours. In front of at least 3 2nd dans. (They all have to approve the promotion) There are a couple more things that I forgetting im sure. Anyway that is a quick run through.
ronryu Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 for Shodan in our dojo we require all kata to that rank which is about 20 or so empty hand kata and then the kobudo kata taht you would know about 5 kobudo kata . also about 15 okinawan kempo as well as all bunkai and meanings of all kata empty hand and kobudo . You would have to also do a written test which has questions about the history of the style founders deffenations etc... A normal test for shodan is aobut 4 hours. Karate is not a sport , it is a way of life .Sandan Motobu ha Shi-to ryu karate Katsu ryu kempo Ryukyu kobudo
G95champ Posted July 24, 2002 Posted July 24, 2002 Without listing exact moves I will go real general. 1. Above all else we got to understand what it means to be a black belt. (mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and spirtiually) In other words know what other espect of you and what your new postion is in and out of class. 2. Complete several combos of basic moves 3. Although at the time of the test we should know roughtly 11 kata we will only test them on 3. The one that is next in line, One they pick and one we pick. 4. Sparring. We try and bring in 3-5 other black belts and go 5mins each for 30 mins or so. 5. Self Defense aginst a serise of moves from differant postions. 6. General understanding of the Founders and style history Then most important is you character. We do not give blackbelts away. Much less give tests to those who in our minds will dishonor the belt and us. Effort means more than talent. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."
BlueDragon1981 Posted July 24, 2002 Author Posted July 24, 2002 We have to do weapons katas also and a written kata. See told you I forgot something.
shaolinprincess Posted July 26, 2002 Posted July 26, 2002 We need 15 katas (might be a couple more my mind is not recalling at this time) History, knowlege, memorized stuff. ckdstudent Posted July 26, 2002 Posted July 26, 2002 9 unidirectional cardiovascular patterns, once each side 9 four-directional cardiovascular patterns, once each side 18 combinations, twice each side 16 speed drill combinations, two or three times each side Current techniques 10+ minutes full shield sparring (various levels) 10+ minutes full focus mitt sparring (various levels) 10+ minutes defense drills (various levels) Terminology test (15 words) Examiner's choice, any or all of: Two on one shield/focus mitt sparring Multiple attacker shield/focus mitt sparring Multiple attacker defense drills Infighting techniques (with or without takedowns) Stick defense drills Knife defense drills Power test (board break, dropping out of favour now) Anything else the examiner feels like dreaming up All in all the grading usually runs between one to three or four hours, with later dan ranks having longer gradings. The panel of instructors must either be a dan rank higher than the highest student is going for, or made up of three instructors of that rank (i.e. someone going for first dan would be graded by a second dan, or three first dans, at least if first dans could act as examiners). Punchdrunk Posted August 10, 2002 Posted August 10, 2002 At our recent belt test our Shihan told us the Black belt test consisted of 10 rounds bareknuckle (similar to Kyokushin or Enshin) style sparring 10 rounds Muay Thai sparring 10 rounds grappling + conditioning + kihon drills + kata I'm years away and already feel like I'm a little behind in my training for that day. One cannot choose to be passive without the option to be aggressive.
justb Posted August 10, 2002 Posted August 10, 2002 For percussion (Karate) focused people- 1. Typically the current kata one is working on, possibly a review of some previous ones. 2. Definitely a weapon kata (we typically do bo or tonfa), something that shows the weapon/empty hand linkage. 3. Waza: hair grab, lapel grab, choke, wrist grab, bearhug (F/R) 4. One-step semi-free sparring, specific attacks and/or open 5. Jiyu Kumite, 1 on 1 Lately tests for dan ranks have been related to enbu - formal performances of thematic or focused elements. 3-5 minutes long...This is NOT developing your own kata, but a realistic performance of a technique subset. Again, the focus is on understanding of the fundamentals & their applications, rather than an endurance test. Thanks B
shaolinprincess Posted August 11, 2002 Posted August 11, 2002 People have some much to do to recieve their bb's. Its amazing we have so many. It's what you put into it...1st kyu-Okinawa Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Federation
justb Posted August 11, 2002 Posted August 11, 2002 Our style is big on the fact that there is more than just dan rankings...Our instructors are certified using the menkyo system - teaching certificates. What does everyone think? Does a black belt only make someone qualified to teach? Thanks B https://www.seishinkan.com https://www.sakura-0.com
