Tapout
My story starts 5 years ago at a Karate dojo down the street from me. I have never trained in Karate and was excited for my first class. Now, before class started I was talking to a black belt (which I found out later was the instructor of my class) about the school and his training in the martial arts. He told me his been training in Karate for 15 years, with a 4th degree black belt. He asked me if I have past martial art experience, I told him "yes" I have trained Muay Thai for 7 years but my real passion is Sambo which I have been training in for 5 years and still do. Then the black belt stood up and asked for the next class to prepare for training, and then I realized I was talking to the instructor. He explained to us that today we will be sparring and everyone of us will get a chance to spar him. When we finished stretching we put our gear on and began sparring, my first partner was a orange belt with very limited sparring experience and so we took it easy (mind you that, I've sparred countless hours in Muay Thai and Sambo, so I have lots of experience in sparring) After sparring others in the class, it was my turn to spar the instructor. He explained to me to keep my hands up at all times, keep moving, and also no contact punches or kicks to the face or head. I respected and understood the rules so we began sparring. I first caught him off guard will low cut kicks to the thigh which made him stumble and nearly fall, but then he told me all kicks must be above the waist, "ok no problem" I said so we continued. Then I caught him with a right cross to the stomach and a left hook to the ribs, he backed off and I gave him a sec to catch his breath. After that it got bad! REAL BAD! We started sparring again and he punched me right in mouth, he totally caught me off guard since contact to the head was not allowed but I said nothing. We continued and he punched me in the face again but this time with a back hand strike (ouch) I told him "I thought head contact was not allowed?", he apologiased and so we continued but then he hit me with a spinning back kick right to my head which almost knocked me out but I managed to stay on my feet. I asked if "I could catch my breath" but to my amazement he said "no, put your hand up and lets continue" I was shocked, this man is supposed to be an instructor, a person who is looked up to by others in Karate and this is his attitude to new students who just want to learn Karate? I was sick to my stomack I couldn't believe it, so I put my hands up and started sparring, I waited for a kick to my ribs, when I got it I caught his leg with my left arm, grabbed his Gi with my right arm placed my right leg behind his standing leg and drove him into the ground so hard he let out a loud gasp of air and struggled to breath for a few seconds. All the other students stopped and looked at us to see what happened. I took of my gear and left in the middle of class to never return again. Why are their instrutors like this? How do they get high ranks with such a poor attitude? If you have a dojo horror story PLZ share it! Tapout or pass out, it dosen't matter to me! Eye of the Tiger
Cool, that sent a weird feeling in my stomach. I can't really beleive a Karate instructer not being able to hack being beaten, he should of took as an area to improve in rather than act the way he did. Kensai
I agree with Tiger, that is totally sickening. But remember that you did the right thing to leave, and remain calm, not to start hurrling abuse at that him. Well Done Remeber also that not all Sensei's are like that. There are some great ones out there. Be Well
shotochem
Leaving was the right thing to do. This person obviously should not be teaching. Where did you go after? Did you find another dojo? Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
ZeRo
what a stupid man! he should not be an sensei. im glad you kicked his butt!! that makes me angry that we had to resort to such cheap shots as that.
El Guerrero Loco
I'm quite glad that u put his sorry ass in place. Obviously he wasn't good enough if he couldn't even stop a student from wiping the floor with his fake black belt ass. I have a good sensei with a good sense of humour. We allow head contacty tho. lol, sometimes he fools around when we spar, he usually wips me around but he came at me once and i sent him flying to the ground with a good side kick(oddly enough it didn't seem to hurt him ) but seriously tho, good job buddy, i'll prolly be joining combat sambo soon too(as well as karate) "Live free.Die well..." rabid hamster
i guess his ego was too big and he didn't want to look bad in front of his students... Still, that was pretty mean of him! It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, for the most essential things are invisible to the eye.
BlueDragon1981
Yep some people have it and some dont. Walking away was cool A couple martial artists of high rank I know have to big of egos. They never admit to anything that gets scored on them. (dont want to look bad I guess)
diamondick
I think in his way he regarded you superior from the beginning and just wanted to test your skills knowing you were too good for him
Taikudo-ka
If he'd wanted to test skills, he should have been fair and clear about the rules to begin with, not constantly "revising" them, and then breaking his own rules anyway, just to get the upper hand. It's not so much the fact he lost, that can happen to anyone, but the fact that he was so un-sporting and dis-honorable in his attempts to win. If he had lost fair and square, then I could still respect the guy. If he can take his loss, and point out what he did wrong and WHY he lost, then he's still truly a master. He did none of these things... KarateForums.com - Sempai
