Lupin1
Well it doesn't have anything to do with our style, but in our club all the adults decided years ago that they didn't want to wear any bars or symbols of rank on their black belts-- they just wanted to train without all the pomp and circumstance. They still get promoted to nidan and sandan (our sensei doesn't promote above that, I don't think) but they don't wear anything that says what level they are. joesteph
In Soo Bahk Do, the dan belt is actually midnight blue, not black, and white stripes are placed on the left side of the belt (hanging down from the knot) for second and third dan. When it's fourth dan, there's a red band through the middle of the midnight blue belt, and no stripes are used from there on up. ~ JoeVee Arnis Jitsu/JuJitsu
Blade96
ours dont just have their names in japanese Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.You don't have to blow out someone else's candle in order to let your own flame shine. shukokai_guy
I study Shukokai Karate and we use red bars at the tips of our black belts. This is done until sandan (3rd dan) and after this I am not too sure. BOW TO LIFE

mudansha
Shotokan-no bars but stitching color changes to gold at NiDanreally? cool. I've never heard of that before.Neither have I...The dojo I train at has been there for 40 years and shodan belts get shotokan written in Japanese on one side, and the name on the other in Japanese and roman text... all in gold lettering.
