The problem with ranged weapons is that when the bad guys finally get close, you have to ditch your ranged weapon, or just retreat because you don't have one. This fixes that problem nicely. The fact that many of us consider the zombie apocalypse to be the the end of the world says a lot about our perspective. The zombie apocalypse, under the generally accepted conventions, mostly effects humanity. To us, the end of humanity is the end of the world.
