Gi Sizes

Recommended Posts

Thanks. It's good to get a supplier's opinion. I wish there was a martial arts store around here still so I could just go and try things on. There was one right across the street from me but it shut down a year ago. Now the nearest one is in Boston, so I'll be buying online. I'm hoping that, as people said, my instructor will be able to give me an accurate call on what size I need when the time comes for me to buy my uniform (I don't know, though. People tend to not be very good judges on what sizes I need. They always think I'm smaller than I am. I carry my weight well, I guess). I wish those size charts were more accurate-- like if they gave waist measurements and chest measurements and hip measurements and stuff. That would make things a lot easier.

What brand are you looking at? Often if you go direct to their own websites they usually give a full size chart with the waist and hip measurements on. Or you could ring them up / email..

I think I'm going to go for a Century middleweight since they seem to be pretty cheap brand new on ebay right now (the free shipping makes them cheaper than most lightweight gis on other sites) and I'm just a beginner so I don't need anything that fancy. I don't see anything extra on their website except the translation to "normal" clothing sizes, which may help. When I wear mens pajama pants (they're more comfortable than womens) I wear an X-Large and that fits me perfectly, and it says X-Large is a size 6.

Well they do have a chart based on height and weight and from that you're in the middle of the 6. But you'd need to hem it.

Century do do a women's cut gi which might be better?

  • 2 weeks later...

My instructor said today that I could get my uniform! Yay! Of course, what he really said was that there was no rush but whenever I want I can get one if I even want to get one (he's a big fan of people choosing not to wear uniforms, but everyone else at our school wears one and what can I say-- I want to fit in), so what I'll probably do is buy one now and then not wear it for a few weeks because I don't want to seem too eager (I over-think things like that). Plus it'll probably take me time to alter it, anyway. He suggested I get a middleweight, which surprised me, and he said I'd probably be a 5 or a 6, so I'm going with a 6.

And thanks for the suggestion of the woman's gi, DWx, but I think I'm going to go with the men's. It's cheaper and men's clothing has always fit me better (the tops, at least). I have really broad shoulders for a woman and I can never move my arms in woman's jackets. And I think I'll try the men's pants for now because, like I said, they're cheaper, but I may just end up getting the woman's pants next time if the men's don't work on me. I'll just have to see how it goes.

Thats cool Lupin.

Actually I've never worn a women's gi, the ones we wear don't come in women's anyway and to be honest the men's cut is usually the more traditional.
