KarateGeorge
At my school it's Bassai Dai and a "freestyle" kata that we design on our own.
WireFrame
We need to be able to perform any one of the following:Heian Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan, or Tekki Shodan.Plus choose from one of the Brown Belt Katas:Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Jion, Empi, Hangetsu. So more than likely my grading will consist of Bassai Dai + 1 Heian Kata. Jay
If I remember correctly we had to doAll Heian Katas if asked as well as Tekki or Basai DaiAnd choose two from the following.Kanku Dai, Jion, Jitte, EnpiI never did the grading but I think my choice was Kanku Dai and Jion. The key to everything is continuity achieved by discipline.

Blade96
bassai dai and tekki shodan for our browns trying to get shodan Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.You don't have to blow out someone else's candle in order to let your own flame shine. still kicking
All 5 Pinan (Heian) kata, 3 Naifanchi (Tekki) kata, and 2 of your choice, within a certain range of options i.e. not too basic, but maybe saving some of the harder ones for future tests. Many people choose Bassai Dai and Seipai, which are the ones I plan to use. Other popular choices are Seinchin, Rohai Nidan, and Jion.
still kicking
Oh, forgot to mention in my previous post. This is for shodan-ho, so for shodan I will probably do Seinchin and Jion. Too many chances to fall over with Rohai in a high pressure situation, though my balance continues to improve, so we'll see!
