Depends on how much you want to spend?

If you want to be really authentic then go for an "Hirota" belt.

Mind you, not cheap but Hirota is a very popular brand in Japan (Tokaido is considered export fodder).

They have started to sell them in Europe out of Holland. Not sure they have an outlet in the US.

Here is the .jp site:

And here is the Dutch site.

I think you did miss the point if you think I'm not helping by quoting pat morita. In case you were wondering the advice from the quote is this...it doesn't matter. Pick out any one you want.

If he really knew which one he wanted, what would the purpose be of this thread?

He just has to know which one looks good to him. Satin, Silk, with embroidery, without embroidery, tassels, ribbons, bells, whistles. How about just a simple cotton one with your name on it? they are all equally good and in the end it doesn't really matter.

True but to some it is a symbol of their advancement in knowledge of technique.

And if you want to get into traditional matters it DOES MATTER.

Traditionally NOT classically. It is proper to be awarded a silk or satin belt. As this is a higher quality belt, and it is set to represent a major part of your martial art life. In some arts the final belt is red , but if this is the case. You will be a black belt from shodan to judan. So quality if sufficient. When you send your kids on the bus to school with their lunch do you give them a small apple or a big apple to hold them over?...And they are only gone for at the most 7 hours. This is a life long journey.

Classically, you would just get a plain cotton, one, or whatever was on hand or cheap at the time. Unless it was feasible to get a silk or satin obi.

He wants a silk one with red embroidery. Read post 1. What he wants to know is WHERE to get one.

I suggest http://www.kamae.co.uk/silk_black_belts.php

They offer a choice of Yellow Gold, Orange Gold, Silver, or Red embroidery.
