Awesome reply Kickchick.

For me another part of successfully breaking help me in terms of anger control. Seeing what I could do puts the brakes on me when I really start feeling like I want to hit something.

These days the only thing I hit is anger is my punching bag.

Before I wish to start breaking, if I ever get the chance to, I would have to put myself through some serious body conditioning, its no good damaging myself. I believe that before somebody can do breaking they must be of a certain grade or age. And must have had a knowledge of Body conditioning, otherwise you may have some broken bones on your hands!

Few, Kickchick is giving me bad flashbacks to college physics. :bawling:

In Kuk Sool Won, breaking is integrated into the training and testing requirements as well. Under-black sticks to one board breaks (in most schools), but the technique used to break becomes more advanced as you move up. They usually start with mid level spin heel kick, and progress up to jump kicks and jump spin kicks.

Some schools work in palm strike breaks to boards as well, but the only object we break other than boards is a bottle with a palm strike. Again, to focus on speed and precision over un-controlled raw power.

I feel it is a good component of an overall curriculum, but should not be a main focus of the training.

Just my opinion.

On a program called 'Masters of Combat', I don't know if anybody here has seen it, they had a Taekwondo team on it, they had a breaking challenge, the boards were situated in a number of positions, and people were breaking them with Butterfly kicks, and jumping back spinning heel kicks, looked really amazing.

Sometimes I wonder if the way a successfull break pumps us up inside gives us a distorted view of it's importance.

In a way though, if you every really have to defend yourself and the first time your hand makes contact with a reall attacker you need to know how to deal with any pain you might feel at the time so as to keep going. If the first time you hit the guy you yell owe and start shaking your hand how likely is he to leave you alone.

If on the other hand you hurt the guy he may be more likely to rethink wether or not he wants to conitue this.

Yes...very good point SaiFightsMS !

Yes I know KSN Doug ...but basically that's what it all boils down to...that and good technique.

My son (age 7) is testing for his blue belt next week and hasn't successfully broken a board yet with a foot technique. I am working with him this week and next hoping that he will be able to. I have him kicking the heavy bag every day and telling him about the 'law of physics'...but do you think that matters to him?

I think just wanting to (desire) is enough for him!

Hey KickChick, did you try using a re-breakable board?

It really helped my daughter get past the "fear" of the board, and focus on the precision of the kick needed, when she was going for her first break (She was 8 at the time).

No I haven't...actually Sah Bum Nihm disapproves of the re-breakable boards so we don't use them at the school. You just don't approach the break in the same way as using a real piece of wood...its all in the head really for the little ones!
