lol. who said anything about kicking in self defense  the other 3 reasons i gave were about competition

And in NKF/AAU karate you can trap the leg. Snap back was inventented so that you dont get swept, remember i said that.

in self defense, im never going to launch any attacks from 7 feet away. nuff said.

bwahahhaha

I guess I missed that point. However I still don't know about the idea that kicking is faster. O well to each his own right. LOL.....

I do not compete so I really can not speak on that.

As far as the snap back goes it serves a few things.

1. Make the kick sting like a whip

2. Stop the trap or catch which lead to the sweep.

3. To attack the persons arm if they try and catch.

4. Let you change and shift between differant kicks.

5. blaance in general.

6. To protect your groin or stomach from counter attack.

Those are the ones that came to mind.

OK, you're walking down the street and you see a guy struggling with a young girl. He starts to drag her down into a dark alleyway. You realize that she is your sister!

Do you:

1. Walk calmy up to the guy, say "hey, come on buddy!" and put up your guard while circling around him?

2. Run in as fast as possible and launch a flying punch at his head before he even realizes what is going on?

The "flying punch" I refer to is just anything thrown while stepping/leaping in. Basically a street-wise version of the basic step/lunge punch we were discussing.

I just wanted to show an opportunity where a long range attack might be useful in a "real" situation, something G95 insisted didn't exist.

About a young girl "who was snatched kicking and screaming a few metres from her home".

It can happen. I didn't have to wait too long for an example to come along either.

There have also been plenty of examples of rapes happening in public parks, etc, where anyone could happen past, see, and do something... yet usually noone does.

Taikudo-ka, certainly counts for me. Even more so since I live here. =)

I'd like to be around when these sort of things happen, I could make a citizen's arrest.
