I have noticed this Bo Kata done more frequently at tournaments these days. It use to be Sakugawa no kun sho. But I notice alot of the XMA styled martial artists tweaking this kata and still saying its traditional.

Has anyone else seen this happening around them?

Not as of late!

Imho, any Kata that's been "tweaked" can't be called traditional. But, I'm sure it depends on how one views the word "traditional"!

I agree. Are we allowed to post youtube videos through a link?..

Because I would like to show one tweaked version of Tokumine...

Yes you can show youtube.com videos :D

I'd like to see the tweaked version (i'll probably be screaming at my laptop later on it ) hehe

I've seen it being used at least once at every competition I've been to so far.

I've thought about adapting it to an XMA similar format as well.

You will probably score more at an open tournament that way too.

When I use to compete I went to all closed traditional sects, so it was fair game. Now a days people want that flash in the pan at the tournaments. It is nice to see atleast a 90% traditional kata though at those open tournaments.

the 2nd video is the one we do. I dont think I've ever seen that first one at a tournament (yet).

And I was screaming at my laptop watching it too.

I use to scold my students who tweaked our kata. I use to ask..."Why do you learn from me for if you plan on changing it that much"?...I dont mind if its a small tweak like, weight proportionment or even a slight snap change...just dont change it that much.

A lot of what katas do are up to personal interpretation. I wouldn't want to squash anyone's creativity. But, it depends on how much stock you put in to the way forms are done, too.

Now, if it comes to a tournament, especially the open kind, if they throw a fancy tweak in there, then I don't think I would mind so much. Some tournaments judge more for athleticism and aesthitics than other stuff. That doesn't make it right, but it doesn't make it wrong, either. Different strokes for different folks.
