DeeLovesKarate Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 At my school, when you become a brown belt, you must choreograph two musical forms for your black belt test. One with weapons, and one without. I am going for my brown belt in 3-4 months. I am worried about this. I used to be a dancer for 7 years so I know how to choreograph, but in dancing, you can pretty much make up your own moves as fillers if you have to, I'm worried I'll get stuck, also, I can't decide which weapon to master. No throwing stars, cause they're illegal in MASS. Can anyone help me not be so worried about this? Any tips? , Dee Dee C.Normal ( 'nor-m&l)-an adj. used by humans to stereotype
shotochem Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 Hi Dee, I study shotokan. I have never seen or herd of a musical form of kata in shotokan? We practice the standard shotokan katas but never to music. Its a good thing, I have no rythm... may I ask which organization you are with?? Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
shaolinprincess Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 Have you ever watched musical katas on ESPN2? It could help you, they are very fast but it could give you an idea. If we had to make one up on our own I would definetly use a bo(staff). Here are some up coming shows on ESPN2 or ESPN: • Karate - "ISKA Power Breaking Championships" ESPN2, Sat Jul 20 01:00am PDT • Karate - "ISKA Creative Breaking Championships" ESPN2, Sat Jul 20 02:30am PDT • Karate - "2001 World Shidokan Invitational" ESPN2, Fri Jul 26 05:00pm PDT • Karate - "ISKA Power Breaking Championships" ESPN, Sun Jul 28 01:00pm PDT • Karate - "ISKA World Breaking Championships" ESPN, Sun Jul 28 01:30pm PDT :pony: It's what you put into it...1st kyu-Okinawa Shorin Ryu Matsumura Seito Federation
searcher Posted July 17, 2002 Posted July 17, 2002 I suggest that you use nunchaku or kama they seem to be easier to get a rhythm down with. If you seem to get stuck with fillers I suggest you visit http://www.biland.com and look at some of the tricks and use his links for more research. You can also fill with gymnastics moves. "let those who shed blood with me be forever known as my brother."
DeeLovesKarate Posted July 17, 2002 Author Posted July 17, 2002 I know, it's not traditionally in Shotokan, my sensei applied it because he feels strongly about music in martial arts. When you say organization, are you asking about my dojo? thanks, Dee Dee C.Normal ( 'nor-m&l)-an adj. used by humans to stereotype
shotochem Posted July 18, 2002 Posted July 18, 2002 Hi Dee, by organization I mean for example... JKA, SKIF,SKA,ISOK..ect. Im familiar with these and they do not do musical Katas. Do you also learn the standard traditional ones? Heian 1-5 Tekki bassi Dai ect...? Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
DeeLovesKarate Posted July 18, 2002 Author Posted July 18, 2002 Yes, we do standard ones, also. This is just our last two katas and we must create them, cool concept, but difficult. Dee C.Normal ( 'nor-m&l)-an adj. used by humans to stereotype
