sensei8 Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I know what it means, but is complacency as much as a oxymoron to martial arts/artists in such a display of wording?OK?!? I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but, HUH???? **Proof is on the floor!!!
RichardZ Posted November 15, 2009 Author Posted November 15, 2009 I know what it means, but is complacency as much as a oxymoron to martial arts/artists in such a display of wording?OK?!? I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but, HUH???? The sharpest knife is not considered the do-all knife. I am not speaking in metaphorical terms. However, could it not be that complacency is a total negative thing for martial arts/artists?
algernon Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 (edited) Complacency in the Martial Arts/Martial Artist is a oxymoron!I think that this feeling of immunity is exactly the problem. Rather than addressing the issue directly by examining and adjusting our training and attitudes, we pretend that we are above those inadequacies. We convince ourselves that the mere fact that we are martial artists delivers us from complacency, arrogance, ill temper, and a dozen other forms of hubris. This is exactly the complacent attitude that we need to avoid. When we start saying "A martial artist is humble. I am a martial artist. Ergo I must be humble," we assume that we already have certain attributes, and shut out the potential for improvement in those areas. Edited November 17, 2009 by algernon
sensei8 Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Ok! My bad! My point has either been missed or not understood. That's my fault! The reason I don't worry about my becoming complacent is because I'll never be that good. Meanwhile, I'll just keep on training and training and training...I just don't have the time and/or the inclination and/or patience for any complacency! Let others worry about complacency...I just don't! **Proof is on the floor!!!

They are things to be kept in mind, for certain. https://www.haysgym.comhttp://www.sunyis.com/https://www.aikidoofnorthwestkansas.com

However, many of martial artist get caught in complacency as shown for a goal such as a black belt, or degrees thereof. In other words, the rank and symbol are more important and tend to instill complacent tones instead of striving for excellance in ability(ies)

Those who are in the martial arts for rank and degrees only are in the martial arts for entirely the wrong reasons. **Proof is on the floor!!!
RichardZ Posted November 19, 2009 Author Posted November 19, 2009 Indeed, people can be complacent with anything.
