Personally I feel the most common "weapon" is the eku or boat oar. In today's society will not be looked upon as a weapon in the same respect as sai or kama would. I also do agree that the jo and bo are other common "weapons" found in todays society. To answer the question on whatt are kali sticks, they are roughly 2 feet long bamboo or cane sticks used in the art of kali and escrima. they are reffered to as ulesis(sp?) where I train. Hope that helps....btw this is my first post YAY!

Ya I can see where a oar would come in handy. Recently I have been reading more about them in magazines. They suddenly like to throw in weapons like that sometimes.

One thing I think that would be useful to learn would be the chain. They are hard to work with but could be a big help if you know how to use them and you are in an area with one.

Also a belt would be a good weapon. They believe it or not can help you even the odds in a knife fight.

Belts, Chains and Rocks.

Most practical - probably the bo or jo simply for the reasons stated by other members here.

The most fun - Kali/Escrima Sticks. They move really fast and can do a lot of damage very quickly....

Hey XpOiSoN FrEeX, follow the link below and you'll see some pics of various Kali/Escrima sticks. They're usually made of rattan, though I've seen some carbon fibre sticks too... nasty!

At my school I had the option between learning several weapons and I chose the Bo. I chose it because I shoot pool all the time. I compete in tournements and play for money in local pool halls. I figured that if I knew how to use something that I always had with me I would be better off than learning something cool like the sais.

I'd like to learn to use a yawara stick. Little 6 inch piece of dowel, basically (unless you get an octagonal one, which are probably more effective due to the edges). You can carry it anywhere and no one cares. And your opponent might not even see it when you use it... they'll just feel something unnaturally hard slamming/jabbing into them when your fist contacts, which alone could have an interesting psychological effect. Good for fingerlocks and such too.

Best weapon:

Thermonuclear Hand Grenade. 10km blast radius. 100% effective.

Second Best Weapon:

The insides of your head. % of effectiveness depends on how much common sense you put into it.

Avoid using the Thermonuclear handgrenade when possible, but if all else fails...

I think the bo is because it is close to a stick.

Wouldn't a jo be more suitable? I usually come across sticks of various sorts that could serve as decent jos, but bos are friggin' HUGE!

I'd have to go with a jo for most practical weapon. The most effective street weapon is a gun, though.

When the Samurai was outlawed and people were not allowed to carry around swords after the Meiji Restoration in Japan, some rogue Samurai used swords that had a bamboo handle and sheath. It looked like a walking stick, but became a deadly weapon quickly.

I think that if you have sword training it could be just as effective as bo or jo training. Miamyoto Musashi won most of his duels with bokken (over 90 percent), and he never lost.

Know thyself.
