There is a school near me that specifically teaches particular sounds to make for kiai at set points in their kata. In some parts, it's a short "tu." Then there's a "tiah" sound. Then there's the full out "asahhhh!!!" they make at the end. I wonder what the point of this is.

At A Recent Tournament OooH was used alot.

The past is no more; the future is yet to come. Nothing exist except for the here and now. Our grand business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what's clearly is clearly at hand...Lets continue to train!

Got me. Kias can vary in tempo and speed of exhalation which will make different pitches and sound levels, but still, it's not a sound that do, it's a sound that is generated naturally from exhalation...

I think I've heard every form of kiai over the years. Even some of the same kiais sound different from two people who train at the same dojo. Although they all come from deep within, some people are blessed with that James Earl Jones or Vin Diesel voice and their kiais just sound better to me than mine do. :)

But the sound is just the potatos, not the meat.

there's a wide variety of kiai at my school, shihan says hiyah, senseis usually say ai or kyou. the teenage boys usually go for a deep hees, the girls usually have a elongated hus, and the new students usually say us

proud brown belt of Fushin Ryu style!

Mine tends to come out as an "aaaaiiiiii" which really annoys me every time I think of Ali G...

Although on every technique there's a tensing of the stomach and sharp breath out, which usually sounds like "hen".

Just kiai, but kiai effectively!

Bruce Lee's on-screen kiai was unique, to say the least. Watch [listEN] to this clip...

Yet, was his on-screen kiai action effective? Did his on-screen kiai provide protection to his abdominal muscles? Did his on-screen kiai provide any protection for his upper/lower body? Did his on-screen kiai involve the abdominal muscles and diaphragm? Was his on-screen kiai sounded merely from his throat?

:)

EDIT: To add Bruce Lee clip!

Just forceable exhalations, much like boxing.

The silent kiai...very effective!
