Avoiding and defending gi chokes

Recommended Posts

Hey ! I noticed that , I am a very easy prey for gi chokes. I Know how to defend most chokes that dont involve the use of the gi , but when dealing with gi stuff , I am like a innocent granny . My instructor did not teach me any defense (But I have learned gi chokes ) . He make me roll with every one and , and seems to be happy with my ground positioning and control. But I have been chocked from any position with the clothe when dealing with blue belts and up

I know that my teacher will show me gi chokes soon, but I wanna know some basics !

Thanks

Tuck your chin and break their grip is about as simple as I can say it. Bring it up to your teacher though, just say "Hey, I noticed I get caught in gi chokes and I was wondering if we could spend some of class working on those." Most likely your instructor will appreciate your initiative as it might not be something he's thought of teaching in a while.

I'll second Kuma. Get him to give you at least a primer. Without going overboard into specifics of placement, hand control and chin tuck cover most everything you'll need to know.

The main problem with defending gi chokes, as well as any other submissions is this. You're already late. Anyone good, who gets two hands in your collar, is going to finish. Tucking the chin is not a good defense. It's a late defense. Sometimes that's your only option...but you must start off in good position. Here are some tips to avoid chokes.

1. Posture!!! Posture!!! Posture!!! DO NOT ALLOW YORSELF TO BE BROKEN DOWN! If you have a straight back, the opponent is going to have trouble getting into your collar. The beginning of this vid is a good demonstration...Tony talks about punches...but imagine it's someone reaching for your collar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf-dBq1NHOI&feature=channel_page

2. When the opponent grabs your lapel deep, you need to pass to the opposite side. NEVER TRY TO PASS THROUGH AN OPPONENT'S ARM. It sets up an easy choke! I'll post a vid later with some advice on that. So...if your left side is being grabbed, you need to go right. This will keep your other lapel out of reach.

Try those two things for now. I'll make a vid tonight and try to publish it by tuesday on youtube.

Hey thanks for the answers . I didnt write before cuz my computer got destroyed by some weird virus.

Ps1 , good point . I know that when someone reachs your lapel , it may be late . But, just in case , I ´d like to see what can I do to counter that.... Kuma said something about breaking the grip . Its something that I try to do , but sometimes , I do not have time for that.

Thanks for the help , and I ´d love to see more of vids you talked about
