I know the following Shotokan katas :

Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan, Heian Godan,

Tekki Shodan, Tekki Nidan, Tekki Sandan

Bassai Dai, Bassai Sho,

Kanku dai, Kanku Sho,

Empi, Jion, Hangetsu, Gankaku, Sochin, Meikyo, Chinte.

The following kata of Master Asai:

Kakuyoku Shodan, Junro Shodan, Junro Nidan

The above mentioned katas I know very well. I have practised a lot more katas than this, but I haven't memorized those other katas yet.

Heian Shodan

Just this one

I'm a little white belt.

But if you count the 2 months of Kenpo I did then i know 2 kata's. heian shodan and Kenpo's Elbow Kata.

Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.

Just started doing Kanku Dai on tuesday, so add that to my list above.

Man, it's like the Greatest Hits Album of Shotokan katas! It's got a bit of everything in there!

I love Katas. They're so pretty and artistic and spiritual.... 'peaceful mind' =]

and I hate it when people say 'its just a pile of stances' Then you know, they dont understand anything.

Oh man, learning 3 new Katas in as many training sessions? What's gotten into my sensei lately? I was doing Empi, Kanku Dai, and starting Hangetsu tonight! Ouch.

Katas might not be the ONLY way to get those benefits, but they're still a good way to train in my opinion. My body was screaming that fact at me last night haha.

Each kata contains a lot of the basic techniques, so I'd rather work on perfecting katas than drill the basics (which I would also do). Then kumite compliments kata being as its the other side of karate. Just my opinion.
