Tobias_Reece Posted August 8, 2001 Posted August 8, 2001 Hi guys Any views on what people think is the best weapon to use in a kata competition. I dont mean :- 1) which is the best weapon for a street fight 2) which is the worst weapon for a street fight 3) which weapon is best used in sparring and please no "a knife is the best weapon" or "your brain" (not that I dont think these are decent weapons) I ask this because a few months ago I went to a mixed martial arts kata/forms/patterns competition, and in the weapons catagory the Chinese Whip thing (dont know its name) dominated. All the other japanese and korean weapons paled in their wake, even though they were used very well. I believe that this was mostly because the fast spinning moves of the whip impressed the judges more than the slow, precise moves of the Aikido sword. I'm using the same theory when I enter a competition in september - I'm using the Nunchaku not the Bo because I get to swirl it about. thaiboxerken Posted August 9, 2001 Posted August 9, 2001 I think that the rope-dart is a very impressive weapon for anyone to use. I have seen the techniques used in Shanghai Noon by Jackie Chan and in Romeo Must Die by Jet Li. A truly impressive weapon indeed.. How do those guys do that stuff? moobrack Posted August 10, 2001 Posted August 10, 2001 I am a newbie to this forum but I think what Thaiboxerken just said is based on what he sees in movies or on the tele. Just because famous actors use a certain weapon does not mean that it is the best to use in a kata comp. Myself personally, I would use nunchaku. I think this because it is known by a majority of people worldwide and is a very interesting weapon. It is also very fun to watch. I have seen Sensei and Mod Tobias Reece demonstrate and I was very Impressed. niel0092 Posted August 10, 2001 Posted August 10, 2001 There's just something about Tai Chi sword forms that I love. If I could learn one weapon form and only one this would be it. "Jita Kyoei" Mutual Benefit and Welfare

thaiboxerken Posted August 12, 2001 Posted August 12, 2001 "Just because famous actors use a certain weapon does not mean that it is the best to use in a kata comp. " But what they do in movies is for show.... What they do in kata competitions in for show, what's the difference?! Oh, I have seen rope-dart in actual demonstrations too, and it's still impressive. moobrack Posted August 12, 2001 Posted August 12, 2001 Kata Comps are not only for show but to score points and win a medal and they are only to show the examiners and not a random audience.Sorry if this offends you. thaiboxerken Posted August 12, 2001 Posted August 12, 2001 Kata competitions are just good entertainment.. yes you can win medals with it, but it's related to martial arts as much as Rythmic gymnastics is.
