Tonfa or Tuifa

Actually there are several ways of pronouncing "tonfa"

It all depends on where you com from.

You you say "te" or "ti"?

"Makiwara" or "Machiwara"?

"Bo" or "Kon" (Rokushaku-Bo - Shushi-no-Kon)?

"A tonfa by any other name would still hurt."

Too early in the morning? Get up and train.

Cold and wet outside? Go train.

Tired? Weary of the whole journey and longing just for a moment to stop and rest? Train. ~ Dave Lowry

It's a club. No need to get more technical than that. It goes by PR-24, nightstick, and side handle baton on the LEO side as it is, yet whatever you call it isn't much of a big deal. A claymore's still a sword whether you call it one or not.

I thought the different names only arose because of differences in dialect and language. I wouldn't call one more right than another, any more than I would say "taylor ham" is the right name for "pork roll"

A lot of it just boils down to simple translation. A weapon is a weapon no matter what you call it. Best not to get too wrapped up on labels and what something is and is not. I've also seen it spelled "tunfa" and "tong fa."
