white owl Posted February 2, 2009 Share Posted February 2, 2009 I was at a recent tournament and had a terrible time with my hands sweating. I tried to wipe them on my gi before stepping on the floor to do my kata but before I even got done with my approach I need to wipe them again but was afraid I would get points off even though I did not do the bow to start my kata yet. Yes, when I get nerves my hands do seat but, I never had problems in the past holding on to the bo. I was wondering if some of you have any ideas on controlling the slippery hands.I got told to ruff it up with some sand paper but my bo is white washed and I really do not want to do that to it. the beast Posted February 3, 2009 Share Posted February 3, 2009 Don't gymnasts put something on their hands so that they have better grip control while doing their routines, I know that baseball pitchers use a rosin bag, and gymnasts,weightlifters use chalk. Chalk can get very messy, so maybe the rosin bag would work, I just don't know what effect this would have on your bo's finish. Could be something else to look into.If it's any consolation, training with sweaty hands is actually a more realistic way to train. If you were armed with a stick, broom, or whatever in real life when you are about to defend yourself, you can bet your adrenaline will be pumping and your hands will be sweaty. Traymond Posted February 4, 2009 Share Posted February 4, 2009 You need to remove the lacquer from the bo...no matter how much you dont want to...its gonna have to happen if you want to lose the sweaty hands...but if you oil the bo with linseed oil or olive oil it will keep a glossy look clove oil also works...and it wont be slippery or anything...the oil kinda cures the 'raw' wood. I use to use chalk but like someone else said it gets very messy. it does get rid of the sweaty palm syndrome quick.I found using a rosin bag to be better though, and even a stress relieve bag works too long as it is the fabric type.
