nago Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Generally.......Here in Okinawa kids up to highschool age wear thier full gi to class. It is hard, on any given day, not to drive down the road in the evening and see kids walking to some dojo somewhere. Highschool and above usually wear their pants with a t-shirt and change in the dojo. Of course there are exceptions to everything. Cheers.
Blade96 Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Me and a co white belt (when we were white belts) stopped into a tim horton's to pick up a tea right before our tournament in december, ans we had our stuff on, but that was it.We dont even tell anyone our ranks. i was with Sandan/senpai a couple days ago and we were having a drink. He had his shotokan jacket on. But while we did mention that we both do karate and talked about it, neither one of us told our status or told each other's status. Afterwards he said I noticed you didnt say anything about my status or rank or sandan or senpai. I said No I dont do that, thats for you to say if you wanted to. But just like BB's arent supposed to show any stuff in the street (though he played aroundwith the idea of doing kanku dai at a club for fun, lol) you dont tell your rank either. Just as cadets arent supposed to salute an officer while out in the bush. Thats just asking for it. Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.You don't have to blow out someone else's candle in order to let your own flame shine.
Lupin1 Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Just as cadets arent supposed to salute an officer while out in the bush. Thats just asking for it.I never really understood this idea. You'd have to be surrounded by a lot of really drunk biker-type dudes for this to make a difference, imo. At my school the guys always talk about people wanting to fight because they know they're black belts and it makes me wonder what type of people they hang out with. I guess in my circle of aquantinces fighting just isn't that common. Most of the things I learn in karate I know I'm never going to use because I just don't fight and don't expect to have to any time soon. I just can't picture a random person on the street wanting to fight someone just because they're advertising that they're a black belt.

You never know what you might get. =]well as for the cadet thing, you dont salute your commanding officer while in the bush because, who do you think the enemy's gonna go for if they know who the leaders are?btw i was an army cadet for 4 years , well 3 and a half, really. Some people regard discipline as a chore. For me it is a kind of order that sets me free to fly.You don't have to blow out someone else's candle in order to let your own flame shine.
Cable Dog Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 In our dojo, you were to change directly before, and directly after instruction. If we were "caught" fighting (other than TRUE self-defense), or wearing our gi (when not at a dojo or other appropriate area), we were first talked to, then teaching would halt if "caught" again. Faith without deeds, is worthless~Namaste~
Diamond Snake Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 I feel that 'rule' is extremely over the top.I have had three kids in karate. From a very early age. To take them to and from the dojo in street clothes and to clothe them in the dojo is inconvenient and has nothing do do with respect for the art.How should this be a 'no-no'? I can accept, and see, that wearing your belt outside of the dojo may be considered a rule, but your gi? That's just over the top.
Cable Dog Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 To wear the gi without the belt is simply impractical and just an excuse for a loop hole. I hate to be rude about that and I mean no disrespect, but such an act of bringing wearing gi (belt or no) casually outside the dojo say to the grocery store defeats the whole purpose of starting the martial art in the first place, which is to promote self defense, and more importantly, promote life. Wearing your gi outside the dojo would surely provoke others and such an act is extremely detrimental to the cause. As for the wearing of a gi without your belt, that is simply a loop hole. Again, no disrespect meant, simply stating my personal opinions. Faith without deeds, is worthless~Namaste~
